I guess I did realize that Burrow would be graduating this Spring and will be eligible for 2 more years.Burrow spoke on behalf of J.T. Barrett.
"That was pretty emotional for us. J.T. is one of my best friends here," Burrow said Saturday night in Indianapolis. "He's had a great career. It coming to an end got pretty emotional for us both."
Burrow has said in the past how he thinks he and Barrett, personality-wise, are very similar. Their playing styles appear to not be far off either. Burrow has been Barrett's teammate for three years, and together they've seen some weird situations in Ohio State's quarterback room. So it makes sense, just based on those facts, that Burrow would be emotional.
http://www.cleveland.com/osu/2017/12/joe_burrow_on_his_uncertain_fu.html#incart_river_indexthe most important piece of this: Burrow is on track to graduate in May. That means he could transfer after spring ball, be immediately eligible to play somewhere else, and have two years of eligibility remaining.
For now, Burrow plans on being with the Buckeyes through the spring.
"That's the plan, yeah," he said when asked directly if he will stick around and compete for the starting job.
If he doesn't win it, he would be free to transfer and play immediately anywhere he chooses upon graduating in May.
A class act and a talented quarterback. I'll always be a fan.
I think it’s pretty clear he will compete for the job in the spring, and then if he’s not named the starter, transfer over the summer. So we get a Dec. 6 article that [more] adamantly states his plan is to the stay and compete.
Now the after-bowl article says there is some consideration into transferring. Blame the off-season for me reading into this, but I take it as a sign he has a clearer picture of where he stands after 15 bowl practices.
Positive- perhaps Haskins continued to separate himself (or Martell even). Negative- losing Joey B.
Fair. Like I said, early off-season boredom and reading too much into it. Earlier article seemed to frame it around competing in Spring and this article he states he has to make a decision "soon."I think it’s pretty clear he will compete for the job in the spring, and then if he’s not named the starter, transfer over the summer.
I don’t see a contradiction between the two articles.

Obviously, the spring timeline makes sense with his graduation in May.
