QB J.T. Barrett (B1G FOY, All American, Silver Football Award, 3x B1G QBOY, National Champion)

I can't say for sure but at least Cardale could put the ball in a position where his receivers could make plays. JT doesn't give his receivers much of a chance on the deep balls. I think a lot of the success in 2014 for JT came from Herman calling plays that could put him a position to succeed.

just so i understand you correctly, your saying the kid who beat out the upper classman cardale not once but twice for the starting job was the inferior qb? the first time as a redshirt freshman. the second time after he lost his starting job to an injury (cardale didn't take over because jt wasn't getting the job done or because anyone involved with the team thought cardale was better, he did so because jt broke his actual ankle). jt didn't get hardly any reps at all in the spring because of said injury. i would also make note that jt then beat cardale for the position yet again under a position coach not named tom herman the second time around during the actual season so... not sure how not having tom herman anymore is a knock on jt but not a knock on cardale... is it because cardale was flourishing under the not tom herman guidance he was receiving..? maybe thats why... *ponders*

The problem with Cardale in 2015 was that he lost Devin Smith, Michael Thomas, and Jalin Marshall to make plays for him

yeah, jt never had to deal with these issues thankfully... smith, thomas and marshall were his wr's his entire career and he was only successful because of them. not anything jt did.

speaking of, isn't it typically held that a qb makes their biggest leap during college in their second year as a starter? which jt literally missed almost the entire off season prep for because of injury. then missed nearly the entire season worth of first team reps because cardale had his spot in 1 part for winning the nc and another part because jt missed nearly the entire spring. and if that wasn't enough of a setback in his development, had a qb and offensive coordinator change during that exact time frame? so virtually no preseason reps. no starter reps during the season until the last few weeks. a new qb coach and offensive coordinator (both of which turned out to be less creative then bollman <-- DAVE'S NOT HERE MAN!!!). then! after that debacle of a season for him it actually found a way to get worse development wise. and yet the kid still figured out a way to completely rewrite not only the virtual entirety of the tOSU qb record books but a large chunk of the b1g record books to boot. if only we had made him a fullback instead. things would have worked out so much better for tOSU...

some of you have no clue at all how lucky we are jt didn't turn out 10 times worse than hackenburg. the kid had every single reason and more to literally collapse into garbage after his true freshman season and flame out way worse than the hack attack did. instead he damn near single handedly rewrote every qb record tOSU keeps stats for not to mention many of the b1g ones to boot. but then this is an entire conference with a long history of nothing but just shit qb's across the board so what am i even saying here?

the fact that he isn't considered the literal fucking savior of this team over the last 4 years by this fan base is a testament to our combined ignorance. if you disagree with anything i have said here, ask literally anyone currently on the roster or coaching staff and see which of us they agree with.

I honestly believe JT never fully recovered from both his 2014 ankle injury and 2-year Beck/Warriner clown show. 2014 JT was still a significantly better passer than even improved 2017 JT. Hell I remember a lot of us marveling at how much more accurate he was than Braxton and how much better his decision making was.

That's where I think Herman came in. The passing players were much simpler and set these guys up for success.

Running him 20 times everytime we play a team with a pulse you bet I do

To each his own. I'm not arguing with people about it anymore.

I'll share with you the same thing I shared with my cousin as he was in absolute misery watching the B1G CG; if you can't find a way to break out of the negativity, quit waiting on the other shoe to drop and actually enjoy the golden age of Buckeye football then I simply feel sorry for you. You can recognize things aren't perfect without obsessing over them.

Urban Meyer has lost 8 games since he arrived in Columbus.

Eight

He's undefeated in The Game, has dominated the B1G and won a NC but a huge percentage of Buckeye fans are absolutely fixated on the 8 losses, how bad the play calling is, how bad JT Barrett sucks and that some of the wins have actually been close.

It will never get any better than this and a lot of people are fucking miserable.

It saddens and amazes me all at the same time.

Well, I know everyone raves about Haskins, and Mike Weber called Burrow "the next Tom Brady", so I wouldn't be so quick to say that the whole team worships at the altar of JT.

That being said, when JT is healthy, he is one of the best QB's in college football and an obvious Ohio State legend. I just think Urban has run him into the ground and keeps playing him despite limitations that have arisen due to dings.

I feel like Braxton was a better QB, but both of them had similar experiences....great production, explosive offenses, but a scheme that eventually will wear them out.

Part of the reason we are fixated on the 8 is because how many of those 8 were we clearly more talented than the other team?

Agree wholeheartedly. Yet I still understand the fixation with the 8. Because each game has several specific plays that cost the game (with Iowa being an exception as it was a complete cluster fuck)

In those 7 losses there were glaring passing mistakes attributable to a QB who struggles mightily down field. Those misses and INTs are game changers. And those losses cost the team CCG and Natty chances.

But equally to blame IMO is Urban’s stubbornness. And unfortunately all of that lays at JTs doorstep. No wonder Urban loves him. JT has fallen on his sword for his coach repeatedly.

Sure.

I think the "if but for this or that" kind of thoughts go through everyone's head at some point. When they do for me, I shake my head and come back to reality by keeping the perspective that no one goes undefeated in this sport for 6 years.

I think you can recognize it intellectually without making it the central point of your experience as a fan.

To your point, a quick sampling of coaches in the B1G with less than 6 years experience For reference, Urban is: 72-8 (47-3)

Jim Harbaugh has coached 3 years at scUM and has a record of 28-10 (18-8)
James Franklin has coached 4 years at Ped and has a record of 35-17 (21-13)
Paul Chryst has coached at Wisconsin for 3 years and is 33-7 (22-4)
D.J. Durkin has coached 2 years at Maryland and has a record of 10-15 (5-13)
Chris Ash has been at Rutgers for 2 years and has a record of 6-18 (3-15)

Hell... in one year, Jeff Brohn at Purdue has 6 losses over all and 5 (that's 2 more than Meyer) in the B1G while ol P.J. Fleck, also in his first year, has 7 losses overall, all of which are B1G losses (4 more than Urban)

As for JT..... There is little to argue about. If you're not happy with what JT has done at Ohio State, there's really no point in arguing. (To be clear, obviously you're not the focus of my comments, Jax) For my part, I hope he throws for 475 in the Cotton Bowl, because I'm pretty sure that's the only fucking record he doesn't hold.

so 5 times in 6 years, Meyer has dropped a game he shouldn't have and that is what you choose to fixate on

sounds reasonable
In my mind, that just speaks to the insane dominance Urban has had while at Ohio State... the man has gone 72-8 and... shoulda woulda could been 77-3

I suspect we'd still hear about the 3 though... no reason he shouldn't have had them ready to play. 31-0 is an embarrassment... etc..

Yeah my 15 year old son is negative ALL the time when watching sports. And I’m always like “you know this is supposed to be entertainment right?”
The game that got me to realize I was too invested was Sparty 1998. It literally ruined my week. I mean, I still have a lot invested in Ohio State emotionally, but not to the point that I literally cannot be happy for days in the face of a loss. At that point, I took some stock in myself and realized the idea of getting that upset over something I have zero control over is just stupid. Wins still fee great and losses still hurt... but... I'm not consumed by either. It's not personal If Clemson beats Ohio State 31-0, it is not an attack on me.. I don't have to defend myself to others for being a fan... etc. And.. I'm sure as fuck not "embarrassed" or hoping we don't make the playoffs again because we might have another Buckeye team screw the pooch.
