QB J.T. Barrett (B1G FOY, All American, Silver Football Award, 3x B1G QBOY, National Champion)

Yeah my 15 year old son is negative ALL the time when watching sports. And I’m always like “you know this is supposed to be entertainment right?”

and for the record, not trying to come off sanctimonious. I do think it's an age and maturation thing.

It finally started to dawn on me much later in life than it should have to be honest and i still fall into the same old thought processes from time to time BUT I am able to come to my senses pretty quickly these days.

I honestly just want to help people enjoy this era more than, it seems like, they are because we've all been through worse times and we will very likely be through them again.

During The Game last year, I went to a bar with my brother and brother-in-law. We had an absolutely great time, and we were sitting with four Michigan fans (who turned out to be quite cool), one of whom is Trip Welborne's brother.
Anyway, during this season, I would watch and game, and when the phone rang, I just refused to answer it, because my father would be negative as shit about the first half of just about every game. Needless to say, watching The Game this year with my Dad was miserable as shit. He never used to be this way, and I'm not going to psycho-analyze it. It just blows my mind that others have to be negative about the Buckeyes this year (let alone during the Urban era and JT before).

The game that got me to realize I was too invested was Sparty 1998. It literally ruined my week. I mean, I still have a lot invested in Ohio State emotionally, but not to the point that I literally cannot be happy for days in the face of a loss. At that point, I took some stock in myself and realized the idea of getting that upset over something I have zero control over is just stupid. Wins still fee great and losses still hurt... but... I'm not consumed by either. It's not personal If Clemson beats Ohio State 31-0, it is not an attack on me.. I don't have to defend myself to others for being a fan... etc. And.. I'm sure as fuck not "embarrassed" or hoping we don't make the playoffs again because we might have another Buckeye team screw the pooch.

Preach that SHIT!

During the Ohio State-Oregon Rose Bowl I felt tightness in my chest and shallow breathing. That was the game I decided to dial it back. I was 29.

To your point, a quick sampling of coaches in the B1G with less than 6 years experience For reference, Urban is: 72-8 (47-3)

Jim Harbaugh has coached 3 years at scUM and has a record of 28-10 (18-8)
James Franklin has coached 4 years at Ped and has a record of 35-17 (21-13)
Paul Chryst has coached at Wisconsin for 3 years and is 33-7 (22-4)
D.J. Durkin has coached 2 years at Maryland and has a record of 10-15 (5-13)
Chris Ash has been at Rutgers for 2 years and has a record of 6-18 (3-15)

How many times have those jackoffs played Alabama, Oregon, Clemson, Oklahoma, Notre Dame and Va Tech?

Just so we're all clear, you're a terrible person.

Weighing in on on the appropriate level of insanity, I think that part of it stems from the 24-7-365 coverage of recruiting. Urban's a great recruiter to be sure, but I also suspect that OSU's recruits get a bit inflated in their ratings because they're OSU recruits and that some of our fans overestimate our talent edge. Yes, Ohio State of late generally has more talent than all but a handful of teams nationally, but with respect to teams like PSU, UM, MSU, and Wiscy, it's typically a fairly modest gap and not the NFL vs. high school gap that some fans seem to think it is. This is especially true when the typical OSU recruit can't easily play the "no respect" card that some kids, like Ohio kids who OSU didn't offer who are playing for other BIG teams, use as motivation, when OSU always has the target on its back more so than lesser programs, and when OSU often has less experience than other teams due to more early departures. Sometimes, I wish our fan base would just give credit to the other team for showing up and also having good players and coaches, at least for the given day in which things went wrong.

As for me, during a game I can get insane, but much less so if OSU is just getting beat than when they're beating themselves with stupidity, undisciplined play, or inexplicable play calling. With respect to the rare inexplicable total shit show like the Iowa game, I just go into "OK we've got that crap out of our system for another decade or two" mode and shrug it off.

I mean, if winning the BIG, beating scUM yet again, and having a shot to go 12-2 with a win over USC is something to be really down about, I'm not living life right. Several members of my wife's family are long time Colorado season ticket holders and they bitch less, with much more cause for bitching, than the average OSU fan.

Fuck, let's call a spade a spade. Due to the success of the program since JT took over, some of tOSU fan base have either not experienced what we experienced because they are too young -- or have forgotten how it felt to get kicked in the nuts by Coop on a regular basis -- and now sound more like callers to Finebaum than they do the appreciative tOSU fans that they should.

You can lead a horse to water, but sometimes you can't make the jack ass drink.

There have been far more instances of OSU commits getting dropped in rankings late in the process than instances of them getting raised, at least by a couple of the more "well-known" recruiting sites.

Yeah I believe I'm at my "too invested" point now and I'm not sure how to change it or why I'm this way when I haven't been like this. I've always been more vocal when I watch games but the way I am now to me is unacceptable so any tips would be awesome haha..

Seriously it's to the point now where I'm watching games alone because It's not enjoyable to watch the game with me. Probably not the place for this convo so move it where necessary but not sure where this goes?

I've noticed though that I normally stop with the obnoxious behavior after the 1st quarter. So it seems like I'm so pumped up for the games that I'm wound up too tight when it starts

You said it yourself already... you're watching games alone because it's not enjoyable to watch the game with you. Is that how you want the rest of your life to go? If not, then take control of yourself and change your behavior. I can't tell you how to do that. You have to make the choice to do it, and then do it. That said, maybe when you feel yourself getting wound up, you remind yourself you don't want to be controlled by something completely outside your control, take a breath, and go back to trying to enjoy the game.

You say you wind down by Q 2, so it's not like you're incapable of it.... if you're getting wound up, remind yourself the game is 4 quarters....
