QB J.T. Barrett (B1G FOY, All American, Silver Football Award, 3x B1G QBOY, National Champion)

I doubt think Wilson is more athletic than JT...I've seen JT make moves as sick as any Wilson has made. I'll concede that Wilson is a bit faster, though. I also don't think Wilson has a "much" livelier arm...
Wilson is a little better at escaping in the pocket though the difference isn't pronounced.

The difference in arm strength is gigantic. Barrett has a very average arm for college and a poor one for the pros. Wilson has a very good arm by NFL standards. He's just too short for scouts.

12 Gauge's arm? Yes. Wilson's arm? No.
12G has a first pick in the draft arm.

Wilson has always had a very good arm

Barrett's lack of arm strength is the reason there is zero threat of him leaving early . He simply isn't a coveted commodity . If he really elevates his game and routinely distributes the ball like he did against Sparty last year, someone will take a mid to late round flyer on him but it will be in spite of his arm strength.

He's got a better arm than McCoy imo... drafted in the 3rd, started for 2 shitty franchises... [shrugs] and now looking like a journeyman backup.
A lot of people said Bridgewater's arm wasn't good enough either. I think Teddy can make some throws JT hasn't shown... but the "big arm" thing doesn't seem to stop teams from drafting (esp outside the 1st) or giving opportunities.
JT has a ton of upside in other areas (I'd take him every day of the week over McCoy) ... a little wiggle, good in and out of the pocket, can take off but isn't reliant on that, knows when to cut his run short and save himself, student of the game, natural leader, etc.

JT doesn't get to throw very much. I've been consistently on the record as a big JT fan, but what do you see that makes you think he should be a higher NFL pick than Troy Smith (5th round) was? Maybe a bit of height, I guess.

Considering they were talking about Troy as a 2nd-3rd round guy until the meltdown and his height... well... those two things.
He also had a pretty terrible combine.

Even so, Troy Smith was drafted and got to start. I don't remember who said JT would never even get to start... but... that is what I originally responded to.
If he had left this year, JT is probably a 5-7 project. If he goes back to 2014 production... maybe 3/4. If he improves, maybe 2nd.
Seeing the QBs that get drafted in the top 3 rounds every year... I see no reason he can't make that cut.

But let's say his height is the 5th or 6th round... what stops him from having the same epiphany as Powell? If he's got nothing left to learn at Ohio State, may as well start the clock early. He's a good enough QB to get drafted... and good enough to get chances on the field.
McCoy made $1.5mil this year.

I sort of said that, but really meant slim chance to be a regular or even semi-regular starter. Tons of guys get a handful of random starts. You're right that he could leave after next year if his ceiling isn't going to get much higher though.

I think his arm strength improved quite a bit from last year. He's throwing from his body now instead of just his arm, well at least most of the time. He'll be a satisfactory passer for an NFL team if he keeps working on his mechanics. Andy Dalton and Alex Smith have two of the weakest arms in the NFL and still had very successful seasons and careers with multiple playoff appearances. Peyton and Brady can't exactly fling it around anymore either but they are still effective. The NFL passing game has become very horizontal, where accuracy and quick decision making is more valuable.

Seems like the NFL is actually shying away from drafting on size and arm strength if everything else isn't where it needs to be. That being said, Cardale still would have gone in the first round last year with how bad that quarterback class was and how desperate the league is for younger signal callers.

McCoy was a record setting distributor for four years. JT has been a run first qb most of the past two years (and a run only one in too many ). McCoy threw circles around JT in his first two years as a starter. If JT improves a lot he can become a mid round pick (which I expect). He would not be drafted at all if he declared today.

I'm not arguing that JT won't be drafted, just that he won't be a coveted draft commodity. This all started with the ridiculousness that he has a similar arm to Wilson.

If an incoming QB recruit doesn't want to wait 2 years to start, then BUH-BYE (or any recruit for that matter)! With the way recruits in general are flowing in, you should feel lucky to get 2 years of starting experience. Plus people leave early, so what may look like a small window to start can suddenly become a large window. Not to mention you're still gonna have to beat out the other guys still on the roster. This is Ohio State, so even just one year of starting can propel you to the NFL (see Austin Spitler).

As for Ubran's comments, what else do you expect him to say? It's not in his place to publicly speculate on if a guy will leave early, so he's going to speak as if he has the player for their full 4 years of eligibility.

As for J.T., he looks the part of a journeyman backup QB in the NFL. He'll get his chance to start here and there, but I doubt someone ever hands him the full-time gig, year after year. He's a very cerebral guy, so I could see him having a pretty long NFL career as that backup everyone wants in case their star goes down.
