QB J.T. Barrett (B1G FOY, All American, Silver Football Award, 3x B1G QBOY, National Champion)

McCoy was a record setting distributor for four years. JT has been a run first qb most of the past two years (and a run only one in too many ). McCoy threw circles around JT in his first two years as a starter. If JT improves a lot he can become a mid round pick (which I expect). He would not be drafted at all if he declared today.

I'm not arguing that JT won't be drafted, just that he won't be a coveted draft commodity. This all started with the ridiculousness that he has a similar arm to Wilson.

It started with statements like "he'll never start in the NFL" and "He would not be drafted at all if he declared today"

He'd definitely be drafted this year... look at the class, it's horrible. Goff is the premier QB? Hackenberg ? An FCS guy is being touted as one of the best QBs in this draft. Really. It's terrible. JT would be a late pick, but he'd be picked considering just supply and demand.

The top QB in the class is the kid from Memphis. Frickin' Memphis...

The top QBs per Mel Kiper (first source that came up in Google):

  1. Paxton Lynch, Memphis
  2. Jared Goff, California
  3. Carson Wentz, North Dakota State
  4. Connor Cook, Michigan State
  5. Christian Hackenberg, Penn State
  6. Baker Mayfield, Oklahoma
  7. Dak Prescott, Mississippi State
  8. Cody Kessler, USC
  9. Brandon Doughty, Western Kentucky
  10. Trevone Boykin, TCU
  11. Cardale Jones, Ohio State

Just sayin'; This has to be the weakest QB class since 2007:

JaMarcus Russell
Brady Quinn
Kevin Kolb
John Beck
Drew Stanton
Trent Edwards
Jeff Rowe
Troy Smith
Jordan Palmer
Tyler Thigpen

However, (besides Bradford who has been a NFL starter) there wen't too many prizes in 2010 either:

Sam Bradford
Tim Tebow
Jimmy Clausen
Colt McCoy
Mike Kafka
John Skelton
Jonathan Crompton
Rusty Smith
Dan LeFevour s
Joe Webb
Tony Pike
Levi Brown
Sean Canfield
Zac Robinson

Wasn't that long ago and people were guaranteeing Cardale was going in the second round too. If he is dropping to #11, I don't see that happening just like I didn't see it happening then either. I may be wrong?

I don't take a lot of these very seriously. It's hard to believe how high people keep Hackenberg the chickenshit formerly known as a QB projected for 2nd/3rd round.
But yea, Cardale is probably a day3 guy at this point... Combine could go a long way. Also depends if anyone falls in love with his ideal size and arm and willing to make excuses for other stuff. More than just the Browns get starry eyed and forget to scout when they see some QBs.

Not being able to read defenses hasn't keep people out of the draft. Not being able to hit recievers in stride. Not being able to feel the pocket. Not being able to quickly find the open man. Consistently staring down your receiver. Not being able to escape the pocket when needed. Not having good footwork. Not being a good leader. Not being a decent human being. Not having a good throwing tequnique. Not being tall enough. These are all things that haven't kept guys from a decent career as an NFL qb and many of those are more important than adm strength. I mean shit, manziel can't do half of that list and he has a spaghetti arm and was drafted in the first round. Look at the bottom half of NFL qbs. They can get pretty bad and those teams really just need q leader that will move the chains, distribute the ball and not loose them the game. The better teams are looking for a backup that achieves those goals. I think jt can fill either of those roles and you're draft position is determined by a list of things, and jt checks a lot of boxes.

Lynch, Kessler, and Jones seem like the best options out of a bunch of bad ones, and even then Jones is a developmental pick. I've said before I think Goff is the one some team will get burned by. I don't even need a hand to count up the number of Air Raid products that have made a successful transition to the NFL, because the number of fingers required is zero; Geno Smith being the latest in a 20-year string of busts produced out of that system.

As for Barrett, he'll kill it at the Senior Bowl and combine interviews, and his IQ means he'll pick up offenses quickly. His height will be a deterrent, but he'll get a shot at the NFL when he declares.

Barrett's arm strength is better than most people realize. He's got a future IMO as a pro, though likely as a backup.
I agree! JT will have a lengthy career as a backup in the NFL, IMO. Hes probably a mid round QB at best, and there's nothing wrong with that.

And I'm not sure why some are scoffing at small school talents at QB. The NFL finds anyone from anywhere that's talented. A QB Delaware, Miami(OH), Ole Miss, NC State/Wisconsin, Cal and Purdue have won a super bowl in the past 10yrs. I don't think we can judge all of the QBs until they've had a few years in the league. A number of people were ready to right off Derek Carr after a year, same with Blake Bortles and Kirk Cousins. The NFL is a different beast than the college game, far more cerebral

I'd love for the Lions to take him in the 4th if he's still available. Maybe the 5th. But definitely not 3rd round or higher.

Edit: as for JT, if he were to have declared this year he'd probably be a 5+ rounder. If he gets back to his freshman season ways and is accurate and adds some more arm strength, I could see him potentially being a 3rd round kind of guy. And if he is, he may declare next year. It'd be great to get him back for 2017 since that is lined up to be a magical year (2015 if Beck wasn't hired kind of year), but we should hopefully be good if he leaves with 3rd year Joe Burrows or 2nd year Haskins (hopefully).

Here is the burning question: How many of those names will wind up taped to the back of that Couch jersey?
