ESPN's KC Joyner makes the case for JT: [In$ider] Should J.T. Barrett be a Heisman favorite?

Concludes Barrett should go to New York and is in the race, but it's Mariota's to lose right now.

I think that's fair. Mariota has been pretty incredible and if he keeps it up, he deserves it. The VT and PSU game were outliers but Mariota has not really had an outlier and has been very consistent. But if JT keeps it up, he definitely deserves the invite and with continued improvement, he could be one of the favorites to win next year...is it weird that we might have two candidates at QB? I am musing though, please do not discuss that here haha.

Barrett currently is 8th on the ESPN list (1 fifth place vote): http://espn.go.com/college-football/heisman14/

and 7th at the NFL.com list: http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap30...ch-tcus-trevone-boykin-makes-move-up-rankings

Here are the stats for Crablegs Winston from his Heisman-winning year last season, and Barrett's current and projected stats. These stats are for the regular season only for both:

Winston 2013 regular season:
Passing: 3,490 yards, 35 TDs, 8 INTs
Rushing: 219 yards, 4 TDs
Totals: 3,709 yards, 39 TDs

Barrett 2014 (9 games):
Passing: 2,156 yards, 26 TDs, 7 INTs
Rushing: 582 yards, 8 TDs
Totals: 2,738 yards, 34 TDs

Barrett 2014 (projected for 2014 regular season):
Passing: 2,867 yards, 35 TDs, 9 INTs
Rushing: 774 yards, 11 TDs
Totals: 3,641 yards, 46 TDs

I think Barrett could have a solid game stats-wise at Minnesota, should light up Indiana big-time, and hopefully has the game of his life against scum. So, I think the projected totals are pretty realistic. As you see, Barrett's projected stats compare very well with Winston's stats from last year.

I definitely think JT is in the discussion at bare minimum and likely top 3. Regarding last year, he compares extremely well to the winner. This year Mariota has 2,780 yards and 29 TDs passing, plus 524 yards and 8 TDs rushing thus far. While JT is only a freshman with new personnel, Mariota also has a hodge-podge young OL and new personnel as well to work with. On top of that, he has had no off game and JT has had two (VT and PSU). Imo he should have everyone's votes to this point...but there is also almost a full quarter of the schedule to be played.

JT is still in the discussion though because Oregon likely has 3 games left and we likely have 4. I am just being objective in saying that Mariota has the clear edge now but it is in no way insurmountable by JT or Prescott (or Gordon, who I would actually have 2nd right now with the way he is playing). And regardless, I am ecstatic that our backup freshman QB has performed so well that he will likely get an invite to NY...I think if you would have told me that after Braxton went down, I would have done the whitest dance you have ever seen.

Not picking on you, but that is one week. To win the Heisman, you are granted one off week at the most. Pretty comparable in that one game but that has been Mariota's state line basically every game. He has not had a performance remotely close to JT's performance versus VT and PSU. Not knocking JT because nobody performed in the VT game around him and he won the game for us in OT against PSU. Just saying that at this point, Mariota has a firm lead based on the body and consistency of his work.

Those stats are basically a wash anyway. Calling one better based on 0.2% completion and 0.05ypc is some serious hair splitting.
JT gets a slight edge for the rushing TDs, but both had outstanding performances against an elite opponent, worthy of garnering national attention.
Mariota would be a good pick imo... maybe restore some credibility to that award after Newton-Manziel-Winston

This link goes to ESPN, I came across it on O-zone - this pass and catch is a thing of beauty. Love the touch on this pass: http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=11843981
The touch on the pass is good, but Smith really makes the play. You notice he slows slightly in order to keep the proper location in relation to the ball and the defender. And then he makes a MAN'S catch. As much as I like the throw, I love Smith's route and catch.

I think people looking at that ped aggy game as a knock on JT's overall resume are looking at it a little too narrowly. It's well known now that he was injured/banged up in that game, and when the chips were down, he hoisted the team on his back and won that game for them in overtime in a very hostile environment. I think that game may be looked at more positively than negatively. I still believe he'll need some help to get to NY. But, if he can go out and have two more stellar performances against the varmints and scUM, and a couple of guys ahead of him lose and have a bad performance or two, JT could very well find his way to NY. tOSU is becoming the "hot team" as we head into the stretch run, and are even (gasp!) getting some love in the media. He could ride that wave similarly to how Carson Palmer did with USC back in 2002.

It's probably a bit of a longshot, but I don't think the PSU game will be the hindrance some others do.

He may be deserving but I have to admit I'd prefer he steer clear of the awards circuit and focus on family, football, school etc.
