QB J.T. Barrett (B1G FOY, All American, Silver Football Award, 3x B1G QBOY, National Champion)

Just think: He could be back next year...

In my opinion, he SHOULD be back next year. He is outstanding in the zone read which opens up his passing game. But I don't see that game being successful in the NFL. Of course, I said that Cam Newton wouldn't be any good in the NFL. So take that for what it's worth.

He has 59 passing touchdowns. The Big Ten record is 90 (Drew Brees) (Since 1956). In 9 more games, if he gets only 14 more touchdowns this year, he's only 17 away from owning the record. (That's not WHY he should come back, though.)

I'm guessing that the NCAA record is out of reach. (155 by Case Keenum.)

... I know that, with the young team we have, JT will need to be spectacular if we are to win it all.

I disagree. After watching the other contenders and pretenders, I think the top two teams are obviously tOSU and Alabama, and though I think their defense may be a little more stout than ours (their D-line is incredible), their pair of QBs have far more flaws in their games than Barrett. And we've got more weapons on offense, by a large margin. Finally, our DBs are as good as any college team I've ever seen.

So I think if JT continues to do what he's been doing, which is extraordinary even though it may not look that way, I see another NC coming to the Woody Hayes Athletic Center in January 2017.

HOW J.T. BARRETT'S ASSAULT ON THE OHIO STATE RECORD BOOKS ALMOST NEVER GOT THE CHANCE TO HAPPEN

Try to imagine the Ohio State football program without J.T. Barrett the last three seasons.

OK, we know he didn't fully regain the starting quarterback position from Cardale Jones until last October but try to think about the Buckeyes not even having the option to run him out there at quarterback.

Barrett served as an integral part to Ohio State's jaunt to the 2014 Big Ten Championship before an injury, stepping in for Braxton Miller, who the Buckeyes lost before the season even started. You know the ins and outs of that story.

On Saturday, Barrett set another school record. With a 16-yard touchdown pass to Marcus Baugh, he became the school's all-time leader in touchdown passes for a career with 58. Barrett added another later in Ohio State's 58-0 rout of Rutgers, his 21st career start.

Fifty-nine touchdown passes in 21 starts. Barrett has another year of eligibility at his disposal if he wants it and could do some serious damage to the Ohio State record book before it's all said and done. Chris outlined that here.

The thing is, he almost didn't have the chance to do that.

“Tom Herman and Trent Dilfer were responsible for us signing that kid,” Urban Meyer said on Saturday after his team's victory. “It was my first year. I said I need to see you throw. For some reason, that didn't happen. And we started losing commitments at quarterback right away.

“And Tom said I think we should take this guy. I said what's his name again? He said, J.T. Barrett. I said OK. I called Trent Dilfer from the Elite 11. He went to him. He sold me on him. We took him. He's the first quarterback I've ever signed that I never saw throw. Think about that.”

Meyer and the Buckeyes were after a pair of Ohioans, Malik Zaire and Mitch Trubisky, among others, to add at quarterback in their 2013 recruiting class. Zaire committed to Notre Dame and Trubisky to North Carolina early in the process, which left Ohio State short on some options. Eventually, however, Herman got Barrett to leave Texas for Ohio State, the lone signal caller in a vaunted class that included Joey Bosa, Vonn Bell, Darron Lee, Eli Apple and Ezekiel Elliott. All pillars to Ohio State's run at the 2014 national title.

Meyer trusted Barrett would make good on Herman's promise. It's been paying off ever since.

“We had two people see him throw, but I did not see him throw. I guess I should do that more often,” Meyer joked.

OHIO STATE QUARTERBACK J.T. BARRETT ON VERGE OF ANOTHER MILESTONE

74965_h.jpg,qitok=Bk4iWpwT.pagespeed.ce.dFrLdYZiaL.jpg

Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer did not hold back when speaking about quarterback J.T. Barrett following Saturday's 58-0 win against Rutgers.

"I'm an Ohio State fan so I know all the great quarterbacks at Ohio State, all the great players," Meyer said. "And to see J.T. Barrett throw [59] touchdowns in 21 starts, average almost three touchdowns per game, that's just an incredible feat when you consider the school that he broke it at."

What Barrett broke in Saturday's win over the Scarlet Knights was Bobby Hoying's career record for touchdown passes. Hoying had 57 touchdown tosses during his career in the scarlet and gray; Barrett currently has 59 and a lot more football to play.

But, truth be told, it was just the latest record to fall in what's suddenly becoming a long list for the Buckeyes' redshirt junior signal caller. And, there's potential for one more mark to be matched or broken Saturday when Indiana comes to town.

As things stand right now, Barrett is only four touchdowns away from tying Braxton Miller's record for touchdowns responsible for. Barrett currently has 84 career touchdowns — both throwing and rushing — while Miller's record is 88. Four for Barrett against the Hoosiers and he ties Miller's record; five for the Wichita Falls, Texas native and he will stand alone — again — in the Ohio State record books.

"It's crazy because Braxton, I saw him play and all the things he's done for this university and the great things he's done for our program," Barrett said Monday. "It's crazy to even think about it."

1956?

I think he can break the single season record of 34, also by Brees. But does it really matter? Do your job, win the games, get good mentions for the Heisman and JT Barrett has a lifetime of success in Columbus Ohio, even if he never plays a day in the pros.

TD machine. Even last year when he only started 5 games he still scored 22 TDs, although he was also the 'RZ QB' for 3 or 4 games as well.

I didn't make the website..

"Matter". That's a relative thing. I care a lot more about Ohio State winning games and championships than I do Barrett's personal success (even if personal success almost directly translates to team success). But zoom out a bunch and I care a lot more about other things than I do about Ohio State winning games. And I'm sure most everyone is the same. So yeah - it would be really cool if he breaks all the records by all quarterbacks at all levels. But, no, it really doesn't matter.
