QB Dwayne Haskins Jr. (All B1G, B1G OPOY, Silver Football, Rose Bowl MVP, R.I.P.)

I know man. I know, and I knee that someone would ask me that question too. And thats a valid one.
To answer you, no. I was scared shit less like every other Buckeye fan. But that was different in that an injury forced us to make the change. No such force able Occurence is happening now. Just fans wanting a change.

Did you really trust JT to take over for Braxton in '14? Be honest.

Disagree with the bold. It's not valid at all. Braxton was not beaten out by JT Barrett.. Braxton was physically unable to play the position. JT wasn't thrust into the QB position because people thought he'd be able to do things Brax couldnt. Not even close to a valid question.

OK. I hear you. And your point about Cardale is a better scenario

1) Almost no touch (he has it, he just showed it rarely, opting for the full howitzer on most throws)

2) Weak lateral mobility

3) Weak management of the pocket. The pocket didn't actually collapse on that one play, it just got a little worrisome but held. Meanwhile his eyes dropped, he panicked, and the finish was ugly. He'll stand tall and fire away as he gets more experienced.

4) Staring down reads

5) Understanding of offense

All but #2 are very correctable, and he looks amazing for a redshirt frosh in his first extended PT after getting so few reps before the last few weeks.

I would agree on all of this and especially on the issues being correctable...I think that's why many fans are so excited, you can see every single tool is there but he has fixable issues. On each point:

1) I have watched a lot of film on Dwayne and he has remarkable touch and knew when to use it, so I am not concerned there in the slightest.
2) That is true and a known weakness coming in, he is no Braxton or JT...true pro-style guy.
3) Yes and correctable. Again, showed great poise in his film and I think he will improve with time.
4/5) Staring down reads is often a product of not understanding the offense and progressions. More comfortability with the playbook (and with his receivers in game situations) will greatly improve that. He came in with very high praise for his football IQ and understanding of the game, so again, will come with time.

But end of the day, yeah...these are the reasons JT isn't getting benched for Dwayne. Plenty of reason to get excited about Dwayne and feel confident if he comes in should something happen to JT, but JT is starting for a reason.

I love JT, I defended him last year. I defended him all off-season. I have lost faith however. I dont know the root cause, too many hits? Gun shy after his injuries? Atrocious QB coaching the last two years. I can't say inserting Haskins will fix the problems or even be a net improvement. But I dont think the bucks will beat PSU or Bama or possibly even scUM with JT at QB unless something drastic changes. The book is out on him and those teams will scheme to force him to do what he cant do. We also would probably lose to those teams if Haskins started against them this weekend. But I would feel a lot better about our chances if he was made the starter now and get all the practice and reps in the month before we'd have to find out.

It is touch though, that's what you're failing to understand! Just because it's on a line doesn't mean it's uncatchable or even that hard. The object of a QB is to get a highly catchable ball to your receiver so he can turn upfield and get yards. Example if he would have lobbed that hitch to Berry, he never would have been able to turn upfield and step out of those 2 tackles. Everyone wants to look at that throw to Williams that was too hard, but if you look at it, it's basically a throw away by him. He wanted to get it to him quick but didn't get to his drop in time so he threw it where neither guy could catch it. Ok since he had no touch how many of those balls that he put on the receivers bodies were dropped because they were too hot to handle. The answer is none but Mack and Williams still each had a drop. You comment about his pocket presence but this is his 1st set of significant snaps and how many times did he actually look bad? How about his roll out completions? Barrett still stares down a lot of his throws, I'll admit Haskins can still get better there! And of course he won't know every aspect of the offense and the right audible to make. Everyone seems like Barrett is the answer, but Barrett handcuffs our offense by his vertical passing struggles. The PSU and Iowa match ups loom large and we'll need Haskins vertical threat in both games but the coaches seem unwilling to even try him in meaningful situations!

There is no try. You can bench your team captain to go with the raw, inconsistent freshman (who does not have a great handle on the offense according to pretty much everyone inside the WHAC, due to experience). There is no going back and forth. That was the trash that ruined the 2015 season.

Play calling ruined the 2015 season but we still had enough weapons surrounding Barrett and Jones that year though! We aren't going to go all the way with Barrett at QB! Doesn't matter what play calls were made against Clemson if you can't stretch the field vertically, against a legit front 7 Barrett's limitations show their true colors. I'm here just here being honest, if we get down again like we did against Oklahoma, I want a QB that has the arm talent to make the throws that can bring us back. Doesn't matter how much of the playbook you know if you can't make the throws to keep a defense honest. We can either move closer to Haskins ceiling going forward this year or stick with Barrett who hit his ceiling in 2014. Just look at the 2 actual QBs we played this year, Barrett got badly outplayed by both Lagow and Mayfield! You can't have your field general being severely outplayed by the opposing QB when the other teams talent pool is just as rich as ours. I'm not here to throw Barrett under the bus, but we need a gameplan that utilizes both QBs in big games. We've seen what a big talented DL can do to Barrett when they have no respect of the vertical pass game. Sweeney verbally said in a press conference that our offense was in trouble after watching our offense, Indiana's coach verbally said that Barrett isn't accurate down the field and that they didn't respect that. And what do you know our offense gets smoked the following week. So we can all either keep wearing the scarlet color glasses and ride Barrett the rest of the season with a couple more losses as other coaches are blatently stating our weaknesses or we can force Haskins development and help our dificiencies with packages for both QBs to use their differing skil sets and make this season more interesting in the end. The truth!
