QB Discussion Thread, Cotton Bowl and 2024

I thought Kleinholtz showed better passing skills than Brown in both of their limited appearances. Looking forward to seeing them both in the bowl game.
Bigger sample size with Brown, but I am also team Lincoln. Nolan will be gone if we go with Lincoln, but that's how it works these days. Your never going to have a great backup again. Matt Cassel days are gone.

Nothing I saw from Brown indicated to me that he was or should be the guy. They should start even from here and let's see what happens. We shouldn't have to go out and get someone else if our QB staff is what it's supposed to be.
I’ve been thinking about this and it will be interesting to see how Day moves forward. It will be telling in how he perceives his QB room.

You don't bring in a transfer to compete for the job. They're either the starter or they're the Gebbia scenario. I would think Brown is gone if you bring in a starter. Kienholz stays and Noland keeps his commitment if the transfer is a senior. So, unless there is a can't miss transfer, you bring in a Gebbia-type. The competition between Brown and Kienholz then has to last into the fall or you risk losing one of them. If Kienholz wins the starting spot too early you could lose both Brown and Noland.

I don't think this is true personally......like some of the young receivers willing to wait their turn, there's great value in learning from Day. You've seen it especially with Burrow and Stroud.

I'm of the opinion there will always be great talent coming into tOSU for 2-3 years of tutelage at QB position, before you may see an off ramp. Those few years can be the difference in an NFL career or missing out on professional football. Even if you asked McCord today about his time in Columbus, I doubt he'd ever say regrets the (3) years spent learning in the QB room.

There's not a Fields type guy this year that's a true elite level "can't miss" but there are a couple of 1 year stop gaps who we could absolutely win with. I don't think bringing in a 1 year player is going to run anyone off at this point. Except maybe Brown. Brown couldn't beat out McCord and he looked pretty meh in his small sample size, so I don't think it's a huge loss at this point if he decided to transfer if we brought in that kind of player, especially with Lincoln and Noland waiting in the wings for 2025.

I don't disagree. I just think that the talent Day brings in will want to play by year 3. Year - 1 redshirt. Year 2 - backup. Year 3 - play or transfer. So if Kienholz does win the job, Noland would probably be fine for a couple years behind him.
That imo should be the mentality for a QB at OSU. If you don't win the job by year 4, it is not going to work in our QB room. But I don't want guys that leave after 1-2 years (looking at Ewers and really he just fleeced us for NIL money when he should've still been in HS, though I think Baldwin and Martell exited in roughly 1-2 years as well).

And all that to say that I am also of the opinion that a Gebbia-type is probably best since I do think one of Brown or LK will be as good if not better than McCord...and because there is no Justin Fields or Penix type of talent in the portal imo, no reason to potentially run the guys off that we already have. I realize you run the risk of neither being up to snuff, but the risk of bringing a QB in that runs off either one is not ideal.

It would help a lot if Day played the backups and let them sling it.
Give them a taste of being actively involved, contributing, and developing before being thrown in the deep end.

Anyone consider Brown having a great game in the Cotton Bowl could be a bad thing?

ie----QB consider OSU may choose to go elsewhere if they think Brown wins the starting job.

A decent game from Brown and the D playing great would probably be ideal.

So any current player in portal has until January 2nd to make a commitment.

Nearly all, currently in portal, will make a decision well before January 2nd.

OSU’s bowl game is December 29th which leaves a super small window.

That said, I’m very confident OSU will have their answer prior to Cotton Bowl.

And not for nothing, they likely have their answer now. I believe McCord and Brown (and Lincoln) have all been made aware there’s competition coming….these things don’t happen in a vacuum. Ask Tathan Martell.

I don't think that's how the windows technically work. They need to be in the portal by then but I think they can make their decision of where to go at anytime.

Not that anyone in the portal worth anything will be around that late barring unique circumstances but I just wanted to correct that
