QB Devin "Utah" Brown (Official Thread)

McCord and Brown have battled it out all spring, with neither quarterback seemingly gaining an advantage one way or the other. Back to the point I made above, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported last week that he expects McCord and Brown to both play against Indiana.

“I actually talked to Ryan Day this morning and this will be a battle right through the Indiana game,” Thamel told College Football Live host Kelsey Riggs. “He said as of right now, he expects to play both quarterbacks in that game. There’s a big scrimmage for Ohio State on Saturday. That could maybe determine who does become the starter, eventually. Interesting battle. Kyle McCord, a little more veteran, a little more polished. He’s kind of a more drop-back guy. Devin Brown’s got a little more wiggle to him and a little more of a dual-threat.”

“What they want is to find a quarterback because they have to build an identity,” Thamel continued.” They go to Notre Dame on Sept. 23. By then, they certainly want to have that battle set.”

I hope we're not listening to Zach Smith....

What exactly has Smith done to lose his credibility on judging the development of players? Honest question. His personal life has nothing to do with his coaching and assessing football talents. I would trust his take on things over Austin Ward and Bill Landis who have been journeyman beat writers for different schools. At least Zach Smith knows what it takes to excel at OSU as a prolific championship coach.

That said, I worry not starting Brown. How many seasons have we watched guys like Caleb Williams and Joe Burrow become more than just a game manager to win games? I would think the fanbase would prefer a guy that can become an X factor when things breakdown rather than being limited on scrambling abilities. It feels like a Fields vs Haskins comp.

I get what you are saying, Brown does have that Burrow-esque look to him in terms of extending plays and improvising. But this year a more game manager type might be exactly what we need to just distribute the ball to our weapons on offense.

But I think Brown plays early and fairly often, and if the OL is struggling to protect the QB then Brown may be the guy by default with more scrambling ability. McCord is more athletic than he gets credit for, but it seems like Brown is the better scrambler. If McCord is not getting it done, it is really easy to throw Brown in there since they have been splitting the reps and both have impressed.

Who says I'm questioning the judgement of development of players and not the journalistic integrity? Out of those 3 mentioned....one is far more likely to go the Cowherd/Skip Bayless/Mark May route.

When he left the WR room was a cesspool of underdevelopment. It took Brian Hartline coming in to create what we have now. The personal issues likely had a lot to do with it because his focus was definitely not where it should have been. Water under the bridge now.

100% agree with you. I just think given the experienced and deep RB corps, the experience and talent at WR that they will elevate whoever’s throwing game. Like you said, the line play will likely dictate who needs to be in. Maybe after seeing guys like JT, Burrow, Fields, etc leaving it all on the field to win has made me jaded. Then CJ actually running vs Georgia has put me in the camp of wanting a mobile qb.

Gonna be an interesting start to the season. Let’s pray it’s better than 05.

Put me in the 'agree with RB corner', as well as most of the posters. Don't believe anything is 'settled' - yet. It will be by Notre Dame day. Both QBs will get major minutes, and we'll see how well each does in live game situations, when a 300 lb DT is looking to take his head off for real. Move the chains, no fumbles or interceptions, scoring TDs inside the red zone, consistency are all keys. Am certainly glad that tOSU has these caliber of players jousting for the position. Not black jerseys starting Saturday. I'd be taking my OL out to dinner.....

I just hop brown gets good reps in the first half. I’d like to see McCord get a full quarter than brown get a full quarter in the first half. Not saying the Buckeyes will have a big lead by halftime, but iff all brown gets is after a 20+ point lead then we won’t actually get a feel for how he deals with tough situations.
The fact that Day is going to play both guys is huge. I never thought that Kyle really got much opportunity to play last year. When he did it was mostly just handing ball off.

Geez, Zurp, somebody has to be the one to take the first snap. By seniority, not talent, McCord gets that honor. However, it's always been said that it doesn't matter who starts the game, but who finishes it when the game is on the line. tOSU certainly won't be tested that way, but I would hope (and have opined) that McCord gets the first quarter, Brown the second, and so on. They gotta get a rhythm going, and two series ain't a gonna do it. Someone will rise to the top before the ND game, you might want to write that down....anyway, looking forward to the 2023 edition of the Buckeyes. Get your popcorn and adult beverage of choice ready.....

No it wasn’t?

When he left we had Terry Mclaurin (who was developed as a 3 star kid and had a huge year), Johnny Dixon, Austin Mack, KJ Hill, and Ben Victor.

He also landed Olave and Wilson for good measure before being let go.

Totally get he sometimes says things that I think is a bit sensational but I also don’t get the total rejection of the guy either. He left that WR room absolutely stacked and to Hartlines credit he took the room to even another level.

However, UFMs offense with a reliance on QBs who weren’t known for their throwing shouldn’t be held against the WRs from 2012-2018. Finally, his WRs were very good I thought and more importantly they knew how to block that’s for sure.

Anyways, I think Devin wins the job if he’s not number 33 lol
