QB CJ Stroud (All B1G, 2022 B1G QB of the Year, All-American, NFL OROY, Houston Texans)

Howard taking heat for the Heisman ceremony comments towards Stroud and Ohio St. Good grief. You finally beat Ohio St. and cannot handle it at all. No sense responding other than to ready ones team for the the rematch next fall. Thanks for the bulletin board material.

After looking at the Heisman Trophy last weekend, C.J. Stroud has an even better chance of winning in 2022

As a redshirt sophomore, Stroud’s opportunities to win the Heisman Trophy aren’t up. He will be back quarterbacking the Buckeyes next season and it could be argued that he has an even better chance to take home the award in 2022 than he did in 2021.

While Stroud threw for an impressive 3,862 yards and 38 touchdowns this season, both Young (4,478 yards, 44 touchdowns) and Pickett (4,319 and 42) bested him statistically. Both quarterbacks also led their team to conference championships, while Stroud did not play in the Big Ten title game. While that’s not in the criterion of being a Heisman winner, it does mean Young and Pickett had an added game at the end of the year when all the voters were watching.

Stroud actually threw for more yards and touchdowns per game than either Young or Pickett, but the lack of a conference championship game, plus missing a contest in Week 4 to help heal a separated shoulder, meant his overall statistics weren’t as good. Assuming he plays the full complement of games in 2022, and with the good possibility that the Scarlet and Gray make it back to Indianapolis next year, those numbers should increase with extra games.

The expectation is also that Stroud will improve heading into next season. While he and Young are in the same class, Stroud did not throw a pass in limited action as a true freshman in 2020. He now has experience playing a full year and can build on that this offseason.

“I know that I’m not going to jump ahead and jump to conclusions,” Stroud said of being a Heisman finalist this year. “I have to have a great offseason, a great time with coach Mick (Marotti) getting bigger, getting stronger, getting faster, work on my mechanics, work on my feetwork like I do and just keep getting better and better so we can ultimately do the things that we really want to do in the season.”

There was also a perception this year that Stroud’s job was made easy by the players he had around him at Ohio State. That the likes of Chris Olave, Garrett Wilson, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, a dominant pass-blocking offensive line and talented running backs were negatives for the quarterback when it came time to vote for individual accolades like the Heisman Trophy.

While Stroud refutes that notion – pointing to the talent at Alabama and Pittsburgh, as well as those that helped previous Heisman winners win – there won’t be the same argument next season. With Olave and likely Wilson off to the NFL, as well as a reshaped offensive line, there won’t be as many household names around Stroud; it will be his offense.

That doesn’t mean there won’t be talent however for the Buckeyes offensively, certainly enough to see him back in New York come next December.

“My guys are going to be just as good as Chris and Garrett or even better,” Stroud said of the Scarlet and Gray’s other receivers. “I know Chris and Garrett probably believe that. You can ask them that. They’ll say the same thing about Julian, about Emeka, about Marvin and all the young guys coming. I have total trust in them.”

Say what now? Love his confidence and this is likely a good sign that his leadership is building, but no one is going to believe that. Dont we wish

HEISMAN HOPEFUL. Due to pretty much nothing of his own doing, C.J. Stroud finished in a rather distant fourth in the Heisman Trophy voting this year, but he'll for sure enter this season (2022) as one of the frontrunners, opening with the second-best odds.
  • Bryce Young (Alabama) +325
  • C.J. Stroud (Ohio State) +500
  • Spencer Rattler (South Carolina) +700
  • Caleb Williams (Oklahoma) +1200
  • Tyler Van Dyke (Miami) +1200
  • Kenneth Walker III (Uh, the NFL?) +1400
  • TreVeyon Henderson (Ohio State) +1600
  • Bijan Robinson (Texas) +1800
  • JT Daniels (Georgia) +1800
  • DJ Uiagalelei (Clemson) +2200
  • Will Anderson Jr. (Alabama) +2500
  • Quinn Ewers (Texas) +2800

Re: Quinn Ewers (Texas) +2800

I'm kind of surprised he's on the list; but I guess some Longhorn fans will be willing take a flier on him.
