QB CJ Stroud (All B1G, 2022 B1G QB of the Year, All-American, NFL OROY, Houston Texans)

Hey, so be it. Nobody on the team should be guaranteed a starting position. Competition makes everyone better. We want the best guy (i.e. whoever is able to put Ohio State in the best position to win) starting at QB.

Exactly. I'm not out on Stroud at all, he could be really good here. But next week you have to let McCord do his thing and see what happens. I think Stroud is injured and Kyle needs to show what he's got. But after Week 3, there needs to be competition because Stroud hasn't proved he's the guy by any measure.

IMO we have also got away from what made us so great in 2019 in JF's first year. Run effectively, involve lots of receivers, go play action (particularly under center) and hit high percentage throws.

To me it's more like run the ball and if it fails throw to Olave or Wilson down field. If anything from the last game I think that game plan is much better for our QBs. Get them under center some, rely on the run game and hit the play action. Unfortunately we just missed on a ton of throws. I think Stroud would like 3 of the misses back, he had a few bad drops by the WRs and obviously his 50yd pass to Olave was negated too.

It all maintains though that if CJ isn't healthy he's not doing himself any favors by playing this week.

Amen. Ohio state is at its best when they run the ball down people’s throats. It helps a young qb and helps the defense in the long run. You found your back….go get em!

Yes and from there get some easy throws.. Seriously we need CJ to be 17-24 for 230 yards with 2 scores and no turnovers. We don't need 480 passing and we particularly don't need forced passes downfield for turnovers.

It's probably obvious and cliché to say, I think Stroud is playing to be perfect rather than just playing. Injuries and all that yeah - in the end he's playing like a guy who is trying to not lose his job rather than a guy who is playing to win a game.

I'm not questioning motives - of course he wants to win games - but it's almost like he's trying to be perfect rather than just playing the game and letting it all come to him. It's that whole inexperience thing again.

Trust the coaches and all but color me a little confused with Day’s marriage to Stroud.

We see the missed throws and shoulder injury.

This week may be a fork in the road. Surely a backup or 2 gets in against Akron. Stroud needs to be healthy and play well. If he can’t, others have a small shot (and I think they deserve a shot, at this point).

“I feel like I’m getting better and better every week,” Stroud said following the Scarlet and Gray’s 41-20 win against Tulsa on Saturday. “I know a lot of people probably don’t agree with that, but that’s okay. I have a God-given talent and every time I go out there, I give it my blood, sweat and my tears. And if that’s a problem with the media, whoever it is, it is what it is. I’m gonna keep my faith in God and my teammates and they have their faith in me and I’m just going to keep going. I don’t worry about the negativity. I’m all about being positive. And I feel like I’m a great player.”

While Day said he doesn’t feel pressure to play his backup quarterbacks this week, and he isn’t going to force putting them into the game if he doesn’t feel it’s the right situation, he would like for some of his quarterbacks other than Stroud to get the chance to throw their first passes as Buckeyes in Ohio State’s final non-conference game of the regular season.

“This week, we’ll take a look at the circumstances and see if it makes sense to have some other guys take some reps,” Day said. “I’d love to get some of those guys in there and see what they can do.”

Although he did indicate that Quinn Ewers, who just arrived in August, hasn’t taken enough reps yet to be ready to play in a game right now, Day didn’t specify whether true freshman Kyle McCord or redshirt freshman Jack Miller would be the second quarterback into the game after Stroud. McCord has often been the second quarterback in line behind Stroud during warmups before each of Ohio State’s first three games, but Day said that how much McCord and/or Miller play against Akron will depend in part on how they practice this week.

“A lot of it has to do with the week of preparation. It really is week-to-week,” Day said. “The better they practice, the more opportunities they’re gonna have.”

Man, all the talk of McCord and Ewers made me forget about Miller. Some really great prospects here. Day is in a tough position. You want to make a decision from how they look in practice and the film room. You don't want to make a decision and then yank them. I'm glad I'm not making those decisions.

I get the logic of 'go get the best 4 you can and let them compete for it" but what's tricky is the reality that the other three can, and are likely to, leave before you are sure you made the right decision and before you can go get three more just as good.

I'm hoping the NIL money can keep some guys in place that would otherwise leave or this could be a real mess.
