QB CJ Stroud (All B1G, 2022 B1G QB of the Year, All-American, NFL OROY, Houston Texans)

Coaches film dropped at 5pm.

CJ's first throw was actually great for only being 8 yards. Read the alignment and strong side drift by the LB's underneath, came back all the way to his left to find the outside man against that familiar 4 under the Pats like to run.

Pressure allowed along the lines was something of an issue. On the first one, the IDL broke threw as CJ was hitting his back foot on his drop. Generally you want to see something of a decision made by the time that backfoot plants, but it's a wash given having a 300lb DL in your lap.

2nd pressure he did a fine job avoiding and creating something out of nothing.

The INT was Bellicheck giving CJ a little razzle-dazzle. In pre-season usually everything is incredibly vanilla defensively. But they layered a late robber behind a 5 man pressure, CJ sort of took the rat safety a bit for granted and didn't double check his position before throwing. At first glance it was a correct read, safety taking a couple steps to bluff a 2 deep. He was dropping (late I might add) to pick up CJ's outlet from the TE leak, but read the rookie well and saw he held onto that deep throw too long. Which is a habit he showed against scUM this past season.
Young QB wants to drive the ball downfield as opposed to taking advantage of (and seeing) a defense playing the shallow stuff lazy.

Rookie QB doing rookie QB things there. Nothing really to see. Still showed quality footwork, delivery and pocket presence. With the advent of the RPO dominant college offenses, that's better than half the rookie classes the last 5+ years.

edit: Naturally being that he's a Buckeye QB in the NFL, you'll have a great many people burying him long before he's dead.

If Bryce Young comes out and struggles too the contrast of coverage will be hilariously predictable.

Cruising through X (Twitter), I’m not seeing Young, Levis, or Richardson’s name being drug through the mud after tonight. And let’s remember CJ only got in for one drive only compared to the rest:

Young: 3 drives, 0 first downs, 4/6, 21 yds, 1 sack

Richardson: 7/12, 67 yds, 1 INT

Levis: 9/14, 85 yds, 1 INT

apparently he got 2 drives. But 4 total attempts so yeah not much

Florio and Simms said on their show today that the offensive line was a train wreck and that there’s nothing CJ could have done as he had 0 time to even think about going through progression. I didn’t see it but they said he was lucky he doesn’t have a broken ankle from one of the plays.

With Tua Tagovailoa in place as the team’s starter, the Dolphins were not in the market for a quarterback at the top of this year’s draft.

But especially after seeing C.J. Stroud in person at this week’s joint practices with Houston, Miami head coach Mike McDaniel is impressed with the No. 2 overall pick.

“I think he is a very natural thrower that has a unique gift of ball placement,” McDaniel said in his Thursday press conference. “He’s probably not bragging about ball placement right now because as an NFL quarterback, as a rookie, you’re in a foreign language. So even when you’re doing awesome, you’re stressed out. Your job is to deliver messages to players.

“And so, he looks the part to me with the way he throws the ball. And you can tell that he has an aura of confidence. That’s exciting to see from a player.”

Cont'd ...
