QB Cardale '12 Gauge' Jones (B1G Champion, National Champion)

Perhaps it's not how he should be handling it, but he ain't wrong. Meyer has handled this poorly and seems to have jerked the players around a bit.

The Twitter stuff is making players look bad because they're not executing, but it's hardly the root of the problem right now. There is a distinct lack of identity and defined roles on offense right now - at QB and other positions as well.

The offensive issues are many, but Cardale showed a major lack of maturity and leadership by doing that on Twitter.

The players elected JT as a captain, even as the coaches made him second string. If JT whined about it I didn't see it. Perhaps the players were telling us something we wouldn't know from the outside. Regardless, I hope CJ accepts whatever role he has and keeps his head in it even if he's demoted. After all, he knows that can change on one play.

I agree that Meyer has done a terrible job handling this one. This decision will define the season and both of their careers. He's trying his best to get Jones drafted, JT prepared for next year, and the offense to win a championship. Problem is that you can only have 1 starting QB. This is the stuff he gets paid millions of dollars to decide on. Choone a son and start him until injury or end of the season dictates otherwise.

A college HC should never put a priority on getting a kid drafted. Its up to the kid, not the coach, and Cardale is blowing it and its on his own accord. He was at a major advantage last year because teams had little film on him and dared him to throw, ad EzE at them up. Now teams are daring him to throw And he's not making the best decisions and it may have cost him his job. Urban shouldn't be worrying about his draft stock as the NFL is very different than CFB as well, and if he can't read college defenses, lord help him against grown man football teams

Holding the ball too long, not stepping up in the pocket, and throwing off of his back foot is finally starting to catch up to him. He hasn't graded out in the first two games and I am sure he will not grade out in this one either and I would bet my right testicle Beck is ripping him for the back foot throws every time he does it. Some on here seem to think it is a gift that he can throw off of his back foot. It is not, it is a fundamental flaw that he needs to eliminate from his game.

I mean it's just totally my speculation of what's going on. That he's doing everything he can to help Jones.

(My opinion only)
The QB's came into the season tied up. Meyer thought either could execute his game plan. He probably already knew JT is more of a quiet leader and Jones is a social butterfly. Meyer knew he had a Junior QB with a cannon and he wants him to get a good draft. He also has a guy though thathe he will have next year. After 2 rough games to start the year at QB I think Meyer realized running read option/zone reads won't work with Jones. Urban told the press he would change his offensive style (to something seemingly to better fit Jones) . Then the QB debacle that happened today was writing on the wall that Jones isn't his guy, not this season. He has to know you can't please both and it isn't unfair to make a choice.

Again, this is just my speculation.

I feel for Cardale but he cant do these things and lead the team. He essentially took a dig at the coaches for mishandling the situation (which Urban clearly has) while the back up and team captain has kept quiet.

I dont see Cardale starting again but can he blame Urban for that? No.

I don't think Cardale was chosen to start so that he could get drafted. I really think the coaches thought that with Braxton Miller as a hybrid and taking wildcat snaps, it gave the best of both worlds. A strong arm QB with the size for short yardage runs and Braxton the dynamic runner who could run the option and tempo.

It seems to me like the coaches are failing to call plays to take advantage of Cardale's biggest strength- his arm.

If your primary play calls are going to be option plays and swing passes in the flat, that really isn't putting Cardale in a position to utilize his skill set.

I think the problems on offense in general and Cardale in particular revolve around several things.

1. The offensive line isn't blocking well.

2. The loss of Herman is being felt strongly and the play calling has been questionable at best (for example, on third and 4 with JT in they throw the ball twice and fail to convert- if Cardale was in they probably would have run two QB draws- it just feels like the staff doesn't understand or is utterly failing to utilize their talent).

3. The loss of Smith, Spencer and Brown is being felt strongly- apparently no deep threat has emerged for Cardale to throw to (Smith) and the perimeter blocking hasn't been great (Spencer and Brown) to say the least.

4. The coaches mishandled the QB situation: both are underperforming and seemingly lacking confidence- almost certainly due to the uncertainty at the position thanks to the coaches.

5. Partially blaming this on #4- turnovers.

What's the answer? Well, hopefully Warriner picks his game up and the play calling and play of the offensive line improves drastically.

I think the young WRs will naturally get better with perimeter blocking and someone has to emerge as a deep threat, right? Right!?

As far as the QBs, I really don't think there is a good answer at this point. Hopefully Meyer can work a miracle there, but at the very least can we please call plays that utilize each player's respective skill set a little better?
