Sources say Art Schlichter (10), shown during his playing days at Ohio State, is being investigated in a ticket-selling scheme.
Anita Barney pulled her car next to her husband's grave, clicked off the safety on a handgun and was moments from pulling the trigger when her cell phone rang.
It was her son, who called by chance, realized what was happening and begged his mom not to take her own life.
"That guy is not worth killing yourself over, Mom," he said.
Since encountering former Ohio State quarterback Art Schlichter about 17 months ago, Anita Barney's life has been nearly destroyed, and not just in that moment at the cemetery.
The 68-year-old Dublin woman and widow of former Wendy's Chairman Robert Barney says she has lost nearly all her money, is estranged from most of her family and friends, and finds herself in the middle of a local and federal investigation of Schlichter.
Sources close to the matter have told The Dispatch that Schlichter is being investigated in relation to a sports ticket-selling scheme and other methods he used to gain money to fuel a compulsive gambling habit that has ruined much of his life.
In an exclusive interview with The Dispatch, Barney said that Schlichter swindled her and dozens of her friends and associates out of millions. She said that Schlichter, who was released from prison in 2006 after serving about 12 years for fraud and forgery convictions, used and intimidated her after she attempted to help him with a loan of $100,000.
"I trusted him and that he was trying to help others now," Barney said. "And that decision has cost me nearly everything."
Schlichter, 50, sent a text message to The Dispatch yesterday saying he has been advised not to comment now. He was to have met with local authorities this week.
"Certainly I will make a statement when able," he said in the text.
