QB Art Schlichter (sad)

Art told someone a couple weeks ago that "someone is trying to throw him under a bus" with no explanation much beyond that. I'd love to give him the benefit of the doubt, but past actions sure do make it hard. :(

At the time he said this was he holding a siphon and a gas can and standing next to the bus?

If you swindle millions of dollars you do not go to the casino, lose it all, and then wait around for the fall-out.....you buy a gorgeous Beach house in Roatan (which has no extradition with the U.S.) under a corporate name, shave your head, grow a beard, and spend your days hitting on drunk cruise ship hotties between your reef dives. :shake:

Only thing worse than a crook is a stupid crook who gets the money and f-s it up.

 I was just like him in college betting on everything.

1978 - The 34th. Annual Gator Bowl :
First Half:
Clemson scored 1 TD, 1 PAT & 1 FG = 10 points
OSU scored 1 TD; Vlade Janakiewski's extra point attempt blocked by Steve Gibbs. Bob Atha hits a 27-yard field goal = 9 points
Second Half:
Clemson scored 1 TD & 1 PAT; 3rd. Qtr. ends @ 17 - 9 Clemson
With 8:11 remaining in 4th. Qtr., OSU scores TD; Schlichter attempted a sweep for the 2pt. conversion & was stopped by Jim Stuckey.
Score = 17 - 15 Clemson

With just over 2 minutes left, OSU has the ball 1st. & 10 at Clemson's 29 yard line, trailing by 2 points.

It has been said Woody's instructions to Schlichter were "OK, we'll run between tackles and eat up as much clock as we can. Bob Atha can hit a field goal from in here and we're outta here with a Win.
2 running plays later, OSU has a 3rd. & 5 at Clemson's 24 with 2:07 on the clock.

Oddly, Freshman QB Schichtler tosses a short, soft lob right between the 5 and the 8 on Charlie Bauman's jersey at the 21 yard line. It was the first and the last interception of Bauman's career.

Bauman was forced out of bounds right into Woody (who was already totally livid "for one reason or another" ... ???). When he lifted the football in celebration, it was right in Woody's face and Woody, who was a natural-born left-hander, responded with a right forearm to Bauman's upper chest.

Clemson ran the remaining 1:59 off the clock for its 1st. Win ever against a Big 10 team.

Woody never made an excuse for himself and never accepted excuses from others.

"I don't apologize for anything," Hayes said after being fired. "When I make a mistake, I take the blame and go on from there. I don't like nice people. I like tough, honest people."

December 29, 2008: "I don't have anything bad to say about coach Hayes," Charlie Bauman said. "He made a mistake. We all make mistakes. I mean, he didn't hurt me or anything."
"Maybe someday, this will all go away," Bauman said. "I hope so."

Thanks for the memories, Art.

Not that you've given it any thought or anything right?

He's on Espn's Outside the Lines First Report today. I never knew his story in entirity, but this gave a decent summary of his addiction. They merely grazed over his latest issue.

Most of the footage was taken in 2007, and with a small appearance from Nathan Williams!

Almost a compelling argument that Art was on the take back in school. Hard to believe that to be true though.

After going back and reading this entire thread, I am curious if anyone else has the same phrase running through their head......

..."Hey, BB73, we need a vBet on the length of his prison sentence!"

Or did you have a different phrase running through your head? :-)

Widow of former Wendy's chairman
Woman says she considered suicide after involvement in Schlichter scheme
Anita Barney met Art Schlichter 30 years ago, amid a tragedy. Now, after placing her trust and money with him, she says her life has become a tragedy.

Sources say Art Schlichter (10), shown during his playing days at Ohio State, is being investigated in a ticket-selling scheme.

Anita Barney pulled her car next to her husband's grave, clicked off the safety on a handgun and was moments from pulling the trigger when her cell phone rang.

It was her son, who called by chance, realized what was happening and begged his mom not to take her own life.

"That guy is not worth killing yourself over, Mom," he said.

Since encountering former Ohio State quarterback Art Schlichter about 17 months ago, Anita Barney's life has been nearly destroyed, and not just in that moment at the cemetery.

The 68-year-old Dublin woman and widow of former Wendy's Chairman Robert Barney says she has lost nearly all her money, is estranged from most of her family and friends, and finds herself in the middle of a local and federal investigation of Schlichter.

Sources close to the matter have told The Dispatch that Schlichter is being investigated in relation to a sports ticket-selling scheme and other methods he used to gain money to fuel a compulsive gambling habit that has ruined much of his life.

In an exclusive interview with The Dispatch, Barney said that Schlichter swindled her and dozens of her friends and associates out of millions. She said that Schlichter, who was released from prison in 2006 after serving about 12 years for fraud and forgery convictions, used and intimidated her after she attempted to help him with a loan of $100,000.

"I trusted him and that he was trying to help others now," Barney said. "And that decision has cost me nearly everything."

Schlichter, 50, sent a text message to The Dispatch yesterday saying he has been advised not to comment now. He was to have met with local authorities this week.

"Certainly I will make a statement when able," he said in the text.
