Purdue Boilermakers (official thread)

Purdue has sunk a ton of money into their facilities over the last few years, which should help with their recruiting. Being just outside of Chicago and Indy they certainly are in proximity to some solid recruiting beds.

I think the question becomes what type of coach makes the most sense. You have your retreads that have been tossed from other programs, your hot coordinator of the year, or your MAC level coach looking to move up. I really wonder whether PJ Fleck would have any more success at Purdue then Hazell had.

Attention: There are no bodies of water in the West Lafayette area that require oars. Do not, I repeat, do not accept this job if offered.

There is a reason that Ross-Ade stadium google searches show 'closed on Saturday.'

This job is, imho, more toxic than UT. Zero support for the program and an expectation of a .501 record. No sane person would take on this job.

Were it not for the fact that PU was a charter member... oh and they can play basketball and apparently it is the place to go of you want to work for NASA, they'd be right behind State Penn on my list of schools to replace.

I think it'd be a good fit for him in some senses.....B1G gig, it's an area he knows (Illinois born), very low expectations, pays well, and most importantly the AD and board are very patient. It's the same reason I thought Iowa State was a good spot for Campbell.

Now Purdue will mess this up and hire Beck or Don Brown or something ridiculous but Fleck makes a whole bunch of sense, as does Jeff Brohm at WKU.

Who knows, maybe Dantonio takes flight for LSU and Fleck gets to slide into East Lansing!

Why you hate on PJ so much?

Not surprised.

Tiller - legendary push broom mustache = great success.
Hope - Ok mustache, but not as sweet as Tiller's = some success, but not as much as Tiller.
Hazell - No mustache = no success.
Brock Spack is ready to return.

FtR: traveling and found an airport bar with a good tequila selection.

I don't mind PU. Not one bit. I rather enjoy traveling there for road games. They are very gracious hosts. They have never shown me anything but a good time. Outside the stadium their fans are fun to hang with and inside... they are equally cordial.

That said, they are a doormat of a football program, a relatively inexpensive ticket, and a short drive from Chicago.

What was my point....

I retract my suggestion that they be replaced. Viva PurDue!!!

I agree with you on those points. Fleck would be a good hire in my opinion. I think gems a good coach in the making has enthusiasm and Purdue has no enthusiasm right now. Whoever they bring in, they need to have some energy to put a pulse into that program.

For the love of all that is merciful and holy, let this happen please...

Please let this come true!

According to 247Sports, one of their sources informed them that former Nebraska head coach, Bo Pelini, would be interested in taking the Purdue job if offered:

“He would definitely be interested in this job,” a source who coached under Pelini told 247Sports this week. “I think he would make a more immediate impact more than any other guy I believe. He would change that culture real quick.”

Pelini is currently the head coach at Youngstown State after being fired by Nebraska in 2014 with a 67–27 record, winning at least 9 games in every season. Pelini currently has a 10-7 record as Youngstown State's head coach.

Pelini would be an interesting choice for Purdue, and one we may not consider when looking at other coaching candidates. However, he may not be a popular choice among everyone.

While his Nebraska teams always finished with at least 9 wins and ended each season ranked in the Coaches Poll (except 2008), it seemed like his teams plateaued and couldn’t go from being good to great. Pelini never won a conference championship in either the Big XII or B1G, and once Nebraska moved to the Big Ten, they would often get steamrolled by talented Ohio State, Michigan State, and Wisconsin teams. This was perhaps the main reason why Nebraska fired Pelini in 2014.

I know what you’re thinking, we’d be salivating over a coach that could get Purdue to 9 wins every season, let alone make Purdue bowl eligible. Purdue doesn’t have the same standards as Nebraska, and never will unless it somehow wins a championship or two. I think Bo Pelini could make a positive short term impact on Purdue football.

Pelini deserves another chance, no doubt about it he can coach and get results.

I don't think it's a great fit for him but Matt Rhule out of Temple is another coach I'm a fan of. I still am confident on one thing and that is that Purdue will botch this.

Suggesting they could botch it implies there is a standard for past success they'll fail to reach.

Joe Tiller won 87 games in 12 years (that's 7 wins a season).
Jack Mollenkopf won 84 games in 14 years (that's 6 wins a season).

These are the two winningest coaches in damn near 130 years of Purdue football. Now, back in the late 70s they had a QB named Mark Herrmann that won a bunch of games for the brief stretch that Jim Young (OSU & BGSU alum) was their coach, but they still never won a Big Ten conference title since that stint coincided with The Ten Year War.

Frankly, Purdue's historic level is being better than Indiana and Northwestern at the very least ... maybe standing toe-to-toe with Illinois for a 7th or 8th place finish in the conference.

That's the fucking bar they need to clear with this next hire. Honestly, it's just depressing to consider what being a fan of that shit must be like.

That's mostly true Dryden, but not completely.

You greatly undervalue Joe Tiller who was a good coach. 10 winning season out of 12 and that includes taking over a complete crap fest of a squad that he inherited. The guy could coach and they have one 4-8 season and kicked him to the curb and they've now learned how wrong they were.
