The "Hide the children" wasn't the first thing I noticed. It was the #2 ranking. By the looks of things, it might be a looooong time before they even come close to that ranking.

If the goal is to "change the culture", I think part of their penalty should be that they must change their team nickname/mascot, and their uniforms. It would be purely symbolic, but it would be a pretty potent symbolism - that whenever they come back, they are in fact a different program.

I think their helmets should have wings.

  • Five-year bowl ban
  • Loss of scholarships over a ten year period, starting with as many as 15 a year in the beginning and gradually stepping down to 3-5 a year at the end
  • No TV ban
  • Full schedule in 2012, all games played off-campus
  • All wins since 2001 vacated
  • Substantial financial penalties, donated to NCAA-approved charities that work to fight sexual abuse

I would say this, but with the next 3 seasons played away from campus. That would truly dampen the rabid football first culture on campus.

I thought they were doing that anyways.

Not so much the team name (Nittany Lions), but the uniforms would have names on the back, colors different and even shoe color would change.

And someone speculated no scholarship (at all) until 2015. That's not going to happen.
