Preseason and Regular Season Polls (2015)

So Oregon's QB isn't even on campus yet and they're #3?
Alabama's Defense lost their best defensive player, Saban got so desperate he brought in a woman beater to play DLine and now he's gone... but the D is looking intimidating again? How much do you want to bet they said the same thing last year. BTW #4 is still projected to be a starter -- that's not intimidating anyone anywhere  Thankfully for Saban, Stave will probably have the yips again so he'll be able to hide Jackson.
No Cooper to bail them out on Offense anymore either.

But Blake Sims won't be starting, so that's good.

Their QB doesn't return but their system does. I think that earns them the benefit of the doubt. #3 is probably a bit high, but they've shown over the years that they can replace a QB and not skip a beat for the most part.

I mean, they made a Rose Bowl with Jeremiah Masoli and he was pretty much a turd.

Post-spring Power Rankings: Ohio State, Baylor lead too-early Top 25

Spring practice is over. Graduation has happened at some schools, and at others it’s right around the corner. The long break until fall camp is upon us, and plenty is certain to change before the first games kick off Sept. 3.

Still, that’s never prevented too-early speculation in the past. And while projecting college football rankings in May is much like deciding what’s for dinner five months before it’s served, we’re going to do it anyway. It’s time to start asking questions: Can Ohio State repeat? Which team will rule the SEC? Can a surprise contender crack the College Football Playoff field?

Without further ado, here is SI.com’s 2015 post-spring Top 25.

    OHIO STATE BUCKEYES
    2014 RECORD: 14-1
The three-headed quarterback storyline aside, the Buckeyes bring back 15 starters from last season’s national title team, including defensive end Joey Bosa, linebacker Darron Lee and tailback Ezekiel Elliott. And while Urban Meyer downplayed Ohio State’s progress this spring, that’s likely more of a motivational ploy than an indictment of roster stagnancy. Keep an eye on a budding receiving corps led by Corey Smith, Curtis Samuel and Noah Brown.

    BAYLOR BEARS
    2014 RECORD: 11-2
This would've seemed strange to write only a few years ago, but the Bears’ playmakers get the benefit of the doubt until proven otherwise. Bryce Petty, Antwan Goodley and Levi Norwood are gone, but quarterback Seth Russell went 14 of 21 for 100 yards in the spring game and seems poised to keep Art Briles's attack humming at Bugatti Veyron-speed. Other players of note: 6’9” defensive end Shawn Oakman, who has already established a reputation as the nation's most intimidating player; tight end LaQuan McGowan, a 400-pounder who scored the most memorable touchdown of bowl season; and redshirt freshman wideout Ishmael Zamora, who makes catches like this and is primed to break out in a big way.
Entire list: http://www.si.com/college-football/...tball-top-25-power-rankings?xid=si_topstories

Note: Doesn't mean a whole lot, considering the way Baylor plays defense any high school QB could probably go 14 of 21 for 100 yards against them.....

1. Alabama may be down a bit, but with that SOB kicking for them other teams are going to have to score on long drives.

2. It's just about time for USC to reassert itself in the PAC. Other programs can win when the Trojans are on suspension - which is often - but once the suspension is over USC always gets the talent from all of California and picks up a few 4 and 5 stars from Ohio, Texas and Florida.

Less than five yards per attempt... did they not let him throw overhand?

Haha - this means Jim Mora is going to be fired. Again.

This is like a double edged sword. It's been beautiful to observe the "USC Dynasty" in it's recession. Long term they still own the state though, and they will only get better on the field and in recruiting if Sark turns out to be decent for them.
On the other side Mora is a douchebag and has had some questionable recruiting tactics in recent years. I'd rather UCLA continue as the dominant California team over USC, but it's unlikely they'll be able to continue their momentum now that USC is off probation and restocking their roster.

I don't think Sark is Cheaty Petey good, but he easily could have hung more points on the depleted Irish defense last season. He was content to run off the clock once they scored 49 points. The previous year Kiffin/Orgeron's squad only scored 10 points and the Irish defense wasn't much healthier for that game. I think USC has a very good chance of resurging legitimately soon unless Sark fucks it up. They're pulling in the recruits, they're off probation, and if they can make their way to the PAC-12 Championship the only real good North team is Oregon...who history has shown just needs to be smashed in the mouth a few times and they'll submit. The only monkey wrench could be their own division, the PAC-12 South. It's a much different place than it was under Cheaty Petey. Todd Graham is a decent coach and pulled out 10 wins, Rich Rod can pull out upsets and had 10 wins last season not to mention played Oregon for the PAC-12 crown, and then of course there's Mora who has done some good recruiting at UCLA while USC suffered and put together his own double digit season. They can't all run the show, but very soon USC will likely have a stacked deck again and it'll take Sark stooping to Kiffin levels to fuck it up.

Sounds quick to anoint USC to the Pac-12 south elite. USC has a lot of great things going for them that gets them a lot of the best recruits in the country. It's a great private school with a rich football tradition. Beautiful campus, beautiful facilities, beautiful women and top cheerleaders. Always warm, beach and ocean are close. Lots of flash, a really hip place to live. Lots to do, the wealthy tech gurus and celebrities are everywhere. Pro sports are all around. I'm sure the bar scene is amazing. A lot of the coolest cities in the US within driving distance. The best recruits in the country will want to go there and they are in a hotbed of talent to boot. All of those things make USC a really difficult keep down. Makes USC really easy to sell. But a lot of those things make a coaches job a nightmare. The type of players that are attracted to all that flash and bling makes it a job to keep them out of trouble. It makes the locker room tough to manage. Not saying all of their players are like that, but a few guys with that attitude and a lot of talent can destroy your team. I imagine Kiffin could do well in a more blue collar place like Nebraska, Iowa or Oklahoma, even out on the east coast at the Clemsons or Marylands, or even in the south at a TTechs or LSUs. Where you get those more blue collar, tough out the cold winters, humid summers, live in the middle of corn fields or swamps, no flash, no celebrity. But that has to be one of the most difficult coaching jobs in the country and it's easy to loose control. A great coach that can keep everything in control (or cheat and get away with it) will win championships there, but I think anything less will leave the program in ruins. Whether or not a coach can keep another program under control won't tell how they do at USC, you don't know until they step into those shoes and prove it.

I just don't see anything that says he's even above-average. They called him "7 win Sark" in Seattle. He's competent at a bare minimum level.... he could consistently get 9-10 wins just b/c of the talent advantage at USC. But anything beyond that? Unremarkable imo. They just went with yet another underwhelming Carroll assistant after Kiffin.
Not sure how realistic it is to expect them to stay off probation by hiring the guys that helped them cheat earlier. Haden is going to have to micromanage to ensure the agents and celebrities don't start coming back to practices.

Not many coaches can get more than 7 wins at UDub. I like Seattle, the campus and the stadium setting. The atmosphere, with boats tying up on Lake Washington for tailgate, is like none other in college football. BUT, the rain starts in late October and goes on until May. Seattle is camping, skiing, sailing, rain forest trekking. Compare that with the "sun, beach, bars and broads" tone of LA and you can see what a Huskies coach is up against.

Oregon, sitting in the middle of a salt marsh, next to a cold, gray ocean, has been able to compete only because they committed to a unique offensive system, maintained continuity through coaching changes and had the financial backing of a major corporation that can translate Duck success into income.
