Premier League (Official Thread)

The rumor was false and denied (at this time), but it would be interesting to see the effect City's owners would have on the MLS if they did own the upcoming club in Queens.

My guess would be a minimal effect.

Got into with Guzan a couple of times and then received his obligatory yellow for throwing a coniption fit at the referee over a non-hanball-call (it hit the AV player in the chest).

He's just a whiner and a generally disrespectful player. He's the Rasheed Wallace of the Premier League.

And "dominated" is a rich term in a game that was 3-nil until the last 3 minutes. Time of possession was misleading because Villa played to protect the lead most of the match. If anybody "dominated" it was Christian Benteke, who is quickly becoming a star in the BPL.

Well, agree to disagree. At full speed that sure looked like a handball, and its a boiling over of months of frustration of not getting legit calls.

And that was complete domination save for about 4 minutes of the match. Which unfortunately has happened way to many times this season

Really, I thought the entire club tapped out after 2007 or so

More like 2010, but you got the picture. They finished 6th in three consecutive seasons (2007-2008, 2008-2009 & 2009-2010) & were near the top for most of the '09-'10 campaign when they finished six points out of fourth. After that, well, it's pretty much self explanatory.

Downfall started with the departure of Gareth Barry to City in 2009 & finally reached it's climax when Martin O'Neill resigned as manager right before the '10-'11 season started. Add in James Milner leaving for City after the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the double departures of Ashley Young & Stewart Downing in 2011 and it was all she wrote for Aston Villa. They have yet to recover from that exodus of talent.

That '09-'10 team was pretty fun to watch. They had a solid team overall & were serious contenders to qualify for the UCL the next season, but ultimately fell short in the end as Spurs trumped both them & City to finish in fourth. Friedel was still great in net. Carlos Cuellar, Richard Dunne, Stephen Warnock & James Collins formed a solid back line. James Milner, Ashley Young, Stewart Downing & Stiliyan Petrov were a great link to the forwards. Gabriel Agbonlahor had emerged as a serious threat up top with his speed & John Carew was still pretty solid before time ultimately caught up with him. Emile Heskey was pretty garbage, but he contributed when they needed him to. Overall they were a pretty good team & I was really pulling for them to finish fourth.

The only reason people still remember Federico Macheda is because of his splendid game winner against Villa that season, even though United would eventually finish 2nd, one point behind Chelsea. '09-'10 was really one of my favorite EPL seasons ever because Liverpool had fallen off the face of the earth that season & it opened up a UCL spot for a team that traditionally never made it to that level, which ended up being Spurs after Peter Crouch (Still a legend there because of that ?) headed in the vital winner at City in the 2nd-to-last-game of the season.

Spurs absolutely dominate the first half, yet have nothing to show for it. 15 corner kicks in one half speaks for itself, but they squandered virtually every single one only loosely threatening on a few. Bale-Walker combo down the left side is really the only place they seem dangerous from, but the runs from Adebayor & Defoe haven't been helpful at all to the Bale crosses. Midfield is almost entirely all Spurs, with Dembele being especially influential, but there's little to no link with the two forwards. Adebayor has at least done something, even if he has been atrocious in the box, but Defoe has been nonexistent.

1-0 Spurs. 'Bout time. Defoe with a nice through-the-legs finish after a nifty Kyle Naughton pass. Just when you thought Villa were back in the game.
