Premier League (Official Thread)

The Man U/Newcastle game was crazy this morning. How in the hell did Newcastle not lose? Man U had about 10+ chances to score in the final 10 mins. Manchester City has a chance to stretch their lead on Sunday against Liverpool.

With the United draw Saturday against Newcastle, if Man City can get three points at Anfield Sunday, that's seven points up. That's a big margin (not insurmountable with the number of games left).

I'm sure all the City players will have in the back of there minds, the beating they received during the last trip to Anfield last year. 3 Goals in quick succession and they were completely outclassed the entire 90 minutes. Big opportunity for them to put last Tuesdays blunder in Naples behind them & open up some breathing room at the top.

That draw also allowed Spurs to get two points clear of Newcastle, and climb to within two of Man U. :groove: After a brutal schedule in the opening weeks of the season, they have made the most of things, getting nine wins and a draw in their last ten matches.

Best thing for Spurs is not many have even taken notice that they're in 3rd place now. They also have a game-in-hand because the opening match vs. Everton was postponed due to the London Riots in August. That is also the most spot-on assessment of Adebayor I've ever seen. He's gone through a whole lot of emotional problems since the Togo bus attack in Angola early last year.

I was asking myself the very same question. Yeah, the penalty on Ferdinand was completely bogus (Can't believe the referees assistant didn't catch more flak) but United squandered so many chances it was unreal. Some of it was heroic goaltending from Tim Krul and some brilliant last-ditch defending but most of it was attributed to poor finishing. Very entertaining finish nonetheless.

Adebayor in particular has been an interesting player in the matches I've been able to watch. He's made me realize some of what's missing in the USA's player pool. He is absolutely frustrating much of the time, wasting opportunities that aren't quite sitters, but that should still be put away by players at that level. He doesn't let that get in the way of having a positive impact for his team though. I've seen him do a lot of positive things in possession, making long passes and countless back flicks into space to allow opportunities to continue to develop. He has been fun to watch in spite of making me want to pull my hair out a couple times.

What's funny about Adebayor?

City is paying most of his wages while with Spurs :tongue2:

He can take out City's challengers, but can't play City. So he could be on the greatest roll of any footballer ever...and can't play City (and Spurs aren't paying most of his wages to boot).

It's alright though. Just like Shay Given, Adebayor will leave City after this year and go for a bargain (for him). Carlos Tevez is a different matter.

He'll be in Milan or Juventus by the end of January.

Man Utd confirm Nemanja Vidic will miss rest of season

Manchester United have confirmed that captain Nemanja Vidic will miss the rest of the season after suffering knee ligament damage in their 2-1 defeat at Basel in the Champions League.

The centre-half, 30, twisted his right knee tussling with Basel's Marco Streller during the first half.

"Nemanja is out for the season," United boss Sir Alex Ferguson said. "It is bad news. He will be a loss.

"I thought [the injury] was a bad one when I saw it."
Ferguson had hoped his captain would only be missing for a couple of weeks.

He said: "[Vidic] sees the specialist on Monday to map out the progress of when he has the operation. It won't be immediate because we have to let the swelling come down."

Rooney just scored his first Premier League goal since September 18th (8 games) and his first overall goal since October 18th. United up 2-0 at the half against hapless Wolves.

I side with City on this and would rather sell Tevez outright rather than loan him (and still have to pick up a portion of his wages).

http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11679/7369678/Tevez-loan-request-rejected

AC Milan have announced that their bid to take Carlos Tevez on loan in January has been knocked back, but they are not giving up hope and expect a long negotiation process
City may have to "eat" a good portion of his contract and/or sell him cheap (cheaper than they'd like), but if they want him gone, it'll get done.

Fast-Forward 2-3 years and Tevez (and Kia Joorabchian) will be doing the exact same thing with their future club (asking for a transfer).

to Sturridge being physically unable of putting in a decent cross

Brought this over from the Champions League thread. Seems he finally heeded your call for decent crosses as he embarrassed Clichy before setting up Raul Meireles for the equalizer. 1-1 at the Half between Chelsea & City on ESPN2 right now.

HUGE win for Chelsea. Frank Lampard penalty gives the Blues the 2-1 win over City and cuts the lead over United to just two points now. What an awful week it has been for City.

Don't really hear this one everyday (as for the reasoning for an extended break). He (Fletcher) was sick last season, so it's probably better he takes a break.

http://www.manutd.com/en/News-And-Features/Football-News/2011/Dec/darren-fletcher-takes-a-break.aspx

Over the past year he has had several absence periods which we have attributed to a viral illness in order to respect his right to medical confidentiality. Darren has, in fact, been suffering from ulcerative colitis (a chronic inflammatory bowel condition) for some time preceding this.

The Blues are trying to crawl back into form and toward the top of the table... great week for Chelsea!
