Pre-Season Practice - 2005

For some reason I was mildly surprised to see Dukes listed as second-string flanker. Man, this receiving core is deep.

Nope, White is the better blocker, at least from all I have heard. Johnson is one hell of a lead blocker, but is having trouble with the various blitz packages.

Not sure about Haw, but from all accounts, Schnittker is kicking some serious ass at TB. According to Herbie and Spielman, at this point he looks like the best TB we have, and they meant that in a very positive way. Herbie still feels that Pittman is extremely under-rated, and is in fact better than Schnittker, but Spiels thinks Brandon is better. Apparently Schnittker showed up fifteen pounds lighter, and is really turning some heads with his running.

I think the other thing to remember is that... to my recollection... in the Tressel era, the depth chart has been- at least the press relaeased version-... how shall we say it... very flexible.

Especially given Tressel's propensity to say things like... if the game were tomorrow... and I think we all know that changes from day to day... (Meaning the game isn't tomorrow.. its Saturday... ).

I tend to think- obviously- that we have a short yardage package that might be Dionte Johnson at FB with Brandon at TB... and maybe another one that has Stan White and Pittman in the Backfield... and if there is anything you probably wouldn't want to draw too many conclusions from, its the WR depth Chart... the list on there probably just tells you what guys you migh see most often... but who knows where they are going to line up... Who ends up where when yuo have two guys in the backfield... and those two guys are Ginn and Wells... who knows.

Datish at LT still does baffle me... but maybe its full circle.. he was projected there way back when... I don't know... the only thing I don't like is that you tend to think that we still have a problem finding guys to step up for all 5 starting positions... and that those of you jonesing to see Alex Boone might get your wish sooner than later.. we'll all find out together.

Brandon Schnittker over Erik Haw - This should REALLY make us worry about the running game that Tressel found it necessary to move a FB to second string tailback. Is Haw stuggling that much?
I was under the impression that Haw is paying the price for blowing that doob outside the dorm, which is why he is not there right now. I also think Shnit may be a more natural reciever coming out from the backfield. Possibly they are thinking they are going to need to use the HB for pass pro more with the one back, either because they still have line concerns, or they want the TE more involved in the passing game.

Actually (again, according to Herbie and Spiels), Schnittker lined up at TB only in one-back sets (three and four wide, etc.). Spiels mentioned that the couple of times Schnitt lined up at the back of the I, the fullback went in motion and ended up splitting out wide. I don't really know what to think, as I never have seen Schnitt do anything but power up the middle, but from how high Herbie and Spiels were on him, I can't help but be impressed. Herbie specifically mentioned that he had some excellent cuts and jukes, and that he was the top rusher in the scrimmage yesterday.

Listen here, Irish... no one cares what you heard on the radio... :wink2:

My point wasn't that all that stuff couldn't happen... just that you're going to see... I think... packages with Schnitt and Dionte maybe... or Pittman and WHite, etc... I'm assuming that they weren't going 4 wide on 4th and one (maybe there were... I don't know)...

As others have suggested, I am guessing Haw is "unoffically" suspended for the first game or two. Making a public announcement would only re-ignite the media into writing their "Tressel has no control over his players" articles and cause a whole lot of bad publicity.

I'm guessing that from here on out, when a kid messes up, if at all possible, he'll quietly be punished internally. It's real simple, tell him he owes 30 days of 6:00 am running and that he's out for a few games and everything goes a lot smoother. No need to feed the vultures and create more bad publicity, especially for something that was already covered ad nauseum last spring.

Look, you German bastard, you can sit there and tell me what you think will happen, but I'm telling you what will happen. Got it?

He's a Convert: OSU safety Nate Salley hails from the Sunshine state of Florida. Salley did not grow up a Buckeye fan, but since coming to Columbus, he has become as Buckeye as a Buckeye can be. His Buckeye fervor has spilled over to the rest of his family who have become an Island of Buckeye mania in his hometown of Fort Lauderdale.

"Everything," said Salley when asked what part of his home in Fort Lauderdale now has a Buckeye flavor.

"My whole house in Fort Lauderdale is scarlet and gray, inside and out. We've got red couches, everything you can think of is scarlet and gray," said Salley.

"My father even has a gray pickup truck now. It's crazy."

Sounds like the whole family are Buckeyes now.

Harley has not only been rewarded, but has been placed in a position of trust. He is listed as the second nickel back behind Donte Whitner. The fact is that he is the only nickel back behind Whitner.

"There's only two of us on the team that knows how to play it," said Harley.

That means that if something happens to Whitner, Harley is the man in OSU's nickel package. That may seem odd since Jamario O'Neal and Brandon Mitchell are generally thought of as the nickel backs, but as it turns out, neither of them are really the nickel back. They are safeties who enter the game to replace Whitner who then moves to the nickel position, and it is that position which Harley backs up.
I found this interesting. Jamario is not the nickle but enters the game when we switch to the nickle.
