Post 23 Season tOSU Coaching Changes

If the Buckeyes play this weird O’Brien situation and turn it into (in my opinion) an upgraded Chip Kelly hire, I will really believe order in the universe is being restored towards the Buckeyes and away from the evil up north. It would give me a hearty laugh at this crazy off season.

Credit to Day and the entire program for the hard work retooling things but that would be some unexpected luck how the dominoes fall.

Now come drive this car, Chip.

I think it would be an amazing fit. Chip Kelly was dynamic at putting Oregon on the map. He didn’t pan out in the NFL and hated LA - understandable. But if you’re truly interested in Day becoming the CEO and giving up play calling , who more to trust than your own mentor. The lessons Day will be able to learn for future growth of himself and the program in this scenario would be outstanding. I think the players would love it, he can recruit well, and there’s relationships built between the 3 big offensive contributors: OC, OL, HC.

Oh yeah. It’s a grand slam that I didn’t even think was a possibility a month ago. Or even a week ago.

What’s his buyout, $9 mil? It seems like a lot but money is made up at this level. What’s some pocket change amongst conference mates. OSU is set to make like $80M/year from Big Ten media rights. Tell UCLA you’ll get them back over the next 5 years or whatever. Smart people can figure that out.

I still won’t believe it. Preparing myself for Mullen (meh) or Candle (I like too).

FWIW, I had posted this is in the UCLA thread (it appears that if Kelly leaves UCLA he might owe $1.5M not $9M):

An exclusive look at details of Chip Kelly’s two-year contract extension from UCLA

MARCH 3, 2023

Showing they believe Chip Kelly is the right coach to lead UCLA into the Big Ten era, school officials on Friday gave Kelly a two-year contract extension and accompanying small raise that runs through the 2027 season.

According to the contract reviewed by The Times, Kelly will make $6.1 million during the 2023 and 2024 seasons — a $300,000 raise over the previous amounts that included $1-million retention bonuses — before getting a bump to $6.2 million per season in 2025, 2026 and 2027. His contract was restructured to add money to his annual salary while removing retention bonuses.
.
.
.
Kelly’s buyout calls for him to receive $8.5 million if he’s dismissed before December 2023 and $4.27 million if he is terminated before December 2024. That amount drops to zero in December 2025.

Kelly, who turns 60 in November, would owe the school $3 million if he left before the end of this season (i.e. 2023) and $1.5 million if he departed before the end of the 2025 season.

Just sayin': I can't believe that Kelly would have left UCLA and over > $6M a year for the OC at Iowa job. However, I'd guess that he is like a group of other college coaches fed up with recruiting/transfers/NIL and would just like an NFL job. If UCLA really wanted to fire Kelly and he wanted the OC position at Ohio State; UCLA might be willing to just agree to part ways.

I could see this going either way. Certainly, Day trusts Kelly enough to let him call the plays... BUT it also sounds like an echo chamber feedback loop to me. Do we really need two Day's? I hope the fact that they're all clearly all in on the year is enough to make them aggressive with the talent we have and not just continuing the turtle-ing we've seen.
