Iowa DE charged with assault

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Iowa starting defensive end Adrian Clayborn has been charged with punching a cab driver who honked at him in Iowa City.

Police say Clayborn left his vehicle, reached inside the taxi window and punched the driver before a friend pulled him away at about 2 a.m. on Jan. 18.

The police complaint said the cabbie sustained minor injuries.

Two months later, the 20-year-old Clayborn was charged with assault causing bodily injury, a serious misdemeanor. He turned himself into police on Friday morning. Iowa's athletic department says he pleaded not guilty.

If convicted, Clayborn could face a year in jail and a $1,875 fine.

"I've been aware of this alleged incident since January and consider it to be a serious situation," coach Kirk Ferentz said in a statement. "Based on what I know to this point, I think it is best to let due process run its course before coming to any judgment."

A standout football player from Bishop Gorman High School made his first court appearance Thursday after his arrest on several felonies that stem from an attack on his ex-girlfriend.

Justin Chaisson, an 18-year-old senior who has received a full scholarship to football powerhouse Oklahoma, is scheduled to return to Las Vegas Justice Court on April 29 for a preliminary hearing.
...
Chaisson faces three felonies: assault with a deadly weapon, false imprisonment and coercion. He also faces a gross misdemeanor charge of false imprisonment and a misdemeanor charge of battery constituting domestic violence.

The charges stem from a March 17 incident that began at Bishop Gorman.

According to a Las Vegas police report, witnesses reported that Chaisson and his ex-girlfriend exchanged words in the parking lot before Chaisson followed the 17-year-old girl to a coffee shop at 6105 S. Fort Apache Road.

Outside the coffee shop, according to the report, Chaisson grabbed the girl's arm and forced her into the back seat of his sport utility vehicle, a GMC Denali. His younger brother also was in the back seat, the report states.

The girl told police Chaisson punched her in the ribs and drove her to the desert before pulling her out of the vehicle. She said he then placed a screwdriver to her neck and threatened to kill her.

FSU receiver Owens arrested on DUI charge

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- A Florida State wide receiver accused of driving drunk is the latest Seminole at that position to get in trouble.

Police spokesman David McCranie says senior Rod Owens was arrested in Tallahassee on a DUI charge after blowing nearly double the state's legal standard of .08 on a breathalyzer early Sunday. The 22-year-old from Jacksonville was released from jail later that day.

Owens didn't immediately return a message left for him with the athletic department, and a home listing couldn't be found.

A Florida State spokesman says coaches are meeting Monday and didn't immediately have a comment.

Five other Seminole receivers were suspended for a game in November after a campus brawl. Receiver Preston Parker was kicked off the team in February after multiple arrests.

Ferentz's son, others arrested

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- The son of Iowa football coach Kirk Ferentz and two other football players have been charged with public intoxication after an early morning incident Monday.

Coach Ferentz said the players will be suspended from spring practice and must perform community service. Their return to the team will be based on additional criteria, he said.

"It was very disappointing to learn of the behavior of our three players last night," Ferentz said in a statement.

According to a University of Iowa Department of Public Safety complaint, James Ferentz, Zachary Derby and Tyler Christensen, all 19 years old, were arrested at about 2 a.m.

Derby, a redshirt freshman tight end from Iowa City, and Christensen, a redshirt freshman fullback from Belmond, according to a campus police report, tried to pick a fight with an off-duty University of Iowa police officer in the Old Capitol Parking Ramp.

The officer, who wasn't identified, called for backup.
During the incident, Ferentz, a redshirt freshman offensive lineman, came out of the parking lot yelling and stumbling, according to campus police.
Officers suspected the three had been drinking.

Christensen refused a breath test. Derby gave two tests that registered
his blood-alcohol content at 0.207 and 0.211 and Ferentz blew a 0.160.

The legal limit for driving in Iowa is 0.08.

They were taken to the Johnson County Jail.

Ferentz was also arrested in October for possession of alcohol under the legal age. He later pleaded guilty and paid a fine.

Officers "suspected" they had been drinking, and one blows almost 3x the limit. Which is like two ticks from comatose.

Something tells me these officers may have to give back their "Junior G-Man Decoder Rings." Nero Wolfe they ain't.

Rising sophomore Enrique Davis was arrested at the Exchange early Sunday
morning while at a party at Jerrell Powe’s apartment. Powe, a junior, received
a citation for a noise violation.

According to the police report, officers were dispatched to the Exchange
following a noise complaint where a Hummer was driving around the parking
lot sounding its horn. Upon arrival, loud music was heard coming from the
second floor of Powe’s apartment building.

The officer approached Powe and took his identification. On the way back
to his patrol vehicle, a young black male, later identified as Enrique Davis,
made a comment that the officer could not understand, the report said.

The officer requested Davis hand over his identification, but Davis looked
at the officer with a “shunning face,” according to the report.

The report said the officer then requested Davis’ identification several
more times and Davis started to walk towards the stairwell and gave
the officer a “crazy face” when confronted about walking away. The
officer grabbed Davis’ left elbow to stop him, but Davis pulled away from
the officer, who then put him up against the stairwell and placed him in
custody for disorderly conduct and failure to comply, the report said.

Davis rushed for 244 yards last season and three touchdowns as a true
freshman. Davis tallied 17 yards on five carries in the spring game. Davis
is competing with Devin Thomas and Cordera Eason for the backup role
to rising sophomore Brandon Bolden in the backfield.
