Pokes TE Pettigrew appears in court

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) -- A court appearance for an Oklahoma State football player charged with assaulting a police officer was continued on Monday.

Brandon Pettigrew appeared in Payne County District Court with his attorney as a judge continued the case until May 5.

Pettigrew, a tight end from Tyler, Texas, was arrested on Jan. 20, when police officers responded to an altercation involving 10 to 15 people at a Stillwater residence. Police have said the group was asked to disperse, but the 6-foot-6, 260-pound Pettigrew refused to leave and allegedly elbowed an officer in the chest.

Third PSU player charged for fight

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) -- A third Penn State football player has been charged in connection with a campus fight last fall in which one man was hurt.

University police charged defensive tackle Phil Taylor with felony aggravated assault, misdemeanor charges of simple assault and disorderly conduct and one count of summary harassment and stalking.

Taylor, along with two former players already charged, beat up a man during a dance in October, authorities said. The victim was treated at the scene in the student union.

Chris Baker and Navorro Bowman, who are awaiting trial on identical charges, were booted from the squad in January, at least temporarily. A fourth player, Knowledge Timmons, was also kicked off the team temporarily and faces lesser charges for an incident after the fight.

Note to JoePa - this is what kicked off the team reads like.
Iowa dismisses WR Cleveland and backup QB Nelson.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP)—Iowa receiver James Cleveland and backup quarterback Arvell Nelson have been dismissed from the team, coach Kirk Ferentz said Thursday.
Both were arrested on drug charges last month and had been suspended indefinitely.
Cleveland, Iowa’s second-leading receiver last season, was arrested in his dorm room on Feb. 23 by campus police after officers found 21 units of the prescription pain killer oxycodone and 24 doses of the muscle relaxant carisoprodol. He was charged with a tax stamp violation, a Class D felony, and two counts of unlawful possession of prescription drugs, both serious misdemeanors.
Cleveland, 19, has pleaded not guilty to those charges. A preliminary hearing is set for March 14.
Nelson, 19, was arrested on the same night on marijuana possession charges. He has yet to enter a plea.

“It’s disappointing anytime one of our players doesn’t complete his career with our team and go on to earn their degree from Iowa,” Ferentz said. “That being said, we wish both James and Arvell success in the future.”
Cleveland started 11 games and caught 36 passes as a freshman in 2007. Nelson saw limited duty behind starter Jake Christensen, but he was expected to push for more playing time in spring practice.
Ok - back to normal State Penn handling of discipline issues.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP)—Suspended Penn State defensive tackle Chris Baker has been cleared by a university judicial affairs panel of wrongdoing during a fight on campus last fall in which one man was hurt.
The decision handed down late Wednesday has no direct bearing on the criminal case against Baker, who is awaiting trial on charges including felony aggravated assault in connection with the Oct. 7 fight.

Huskers suspend Christensen after arrest

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Nebraska offensive lineman Andy Christensen was arrested early Saturday and accused of sexually assaulting a woman at a bar. Nebraska coach Bo Pelini said the junior has been suspended from the team.

A 23-year-old woman told police that Christensen approached her from behind and reached underneath her clothing.

Christensen was arrested outside the Brass Rail bar. He is accused of first-degree sexual assault, resisting arrest and failure to comply, Police Capt. Joseph Wright said. Wright said it was also unclear if Christensen had been drinking. Prosecutors are still to decide on formal charges and Christensen would be arraigned Monday, Wright added.

Rutgers' Francis suspended day after arrest on undisclosed charge

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Rutgers defensive tackle Justin Francis was suspended Friday after being arrested a day earlier.

Francis, of Miramar, Fla., was arrested Thursday, said coach Greg Schiano, who refused to give any details about the arrest or whether the sophomore had been released.

"Unfortunately, Justin got arrested yesterday," Schiano said at the end of his spring press conference. "It hasn't been released, but I know it and I want to let (reporters) know it. I don't have a ton of information, but I'm going to let the legal system, as I usually do, run its course and comment on it then."

Francis played in seven games and made seven tackles as a freshman last season. He was expected to compete for the starting job.

KSU FB players arrested on burglary charges (Cobrani Mixon, Brian Lanhart, and former player Christen Haywood)
Two Kent State University football players were arrested Friday on charges of felony burglary, and a third former player is wanted on a warrant on the same charge.
Cabroni D. Mixon, 20, of 1953 Mohawk Place, Kent, and Brian Lainhart, 20, of the same address, were arraigned Monday in Portage County Municipal Court in Ravenna via video from the Portage County jail. Each is charged with one count of aggravated burglary, a first-degree felony, according to court records. Both were arrested Friday by Brimfield police on the warrants.
A third man, Christen L. Haywood, 20, of 103 Lake Hall, KSU, also is facing the same charge but has not yet been arrested. Portage County Prosecutor Victor Vigluicci said a warrant has been issued for Haywood's arrest.
According to the complaints, filed by the Brimfield Police Department, the charges stem from an incident that occurred Oct. 28 in the 4800 block of Sunnybrook Road. The three are accused of entering a home by force and causing multiple injuries to two other men.
Brimfield Police Chief David Blough said there was a party attended by football players and others at the Sunnybrook Road address. An altercation occurred when a female friend of one of the players was slapped and hit.
The suspects allegedly kicked in the front door of the residence, as well as the pedestrian door from the garage to the house.
"The people inside had locked the doors to try to prevent these people from coming in," Blough said.
