Police/Legal Blotter (stop breaking the law, asshole!)

Especially in the Big Ten... scUM, Purdue, PSU
...Minny...

Maybe it's just phase one in trying to match up with the SEC. Phase two: Coaches and boosters from OSU, Illinois, and Wisconsin descend upon one particular high school in Chicago and pay the coach there scads of cash to direct his players toward their schools. (see: Memphis)

Am I the only one who thinks there are a lot of football players getting in trouble all of a sudden? Like, way more so than usual?

Unfortunately, a lot of young people are getting into trouble. Some of them happen to play football. In terms of "more than usual", I'm not so sure. With the advent of computers, message boards, and media outlets that thrive on scoop reporting, we hear about it more often than we used to. Law enforcement agencies are less willing to "give breaks", and I'm not saying they should, as opposed to earlier eras. Guess my point is, is that stuff has always happened, it's just more publicized in this age. However, the serious nature of some of these crimes is what disturbs me. I hate to hear about all of these arrests and the ties to athletics, regardless of the schools involved.

For those who have forgotten, Alex was one of the Brookhaven players that went to Minny.

Are they being held in Minneapolis?

Three Gophers football players remain jailed

Three University of Minnesota football players suspected of being involved in the alleged rape of an 18-year-old woman at an apartment complex near campus remained in jail Saturday after their bail was set at $100,000.Charges against Alex Daniels and Keith Massey, both 20, and E.J. Jones, 19, could come as early as Monday, authorities said.

If the Hennepin County Attorney's Office does not file charges against them by noon Monday, the three would be released from the Hennepin County jail, said University Police Chief Greg Hestness. But that wouldn't preclude them from being charged later, he added.

The players, who have been suspended from the team by coach Tim Brewster pending the outcome of the investigation, did not play in the team's annual spring scrimmage Saturday at the Metrodome.

After the scrimmage, Brewster gave a brief statement and then said he would not discuss the situation further. University officials told news media members that they would cut off any interviews with players that didn't focus strictly on the spring game.

"Obviously it's a disappointing situation that's been presented to me," Brewster said. "There's an investigation that's ongoing that we're going to cooperate fully with."

Said university athletic director Joel Maturi: "We will let the process take its course and then do the appropriate thing. But I'm not ready to abandon these kids. It's our responsibility to stand by them and their families."

According to Hestness, the alleged rape occurred late Tuesday or early Wednesday at the University Village Apartments on University Avenue, where the players live.

He said that the 18-year-old woman is not a resident there and that she is not a University of Minnesota student.
Hestness said police are continuing to investigate, and he would not discuss how the woman and players encountered each other, or what led to the alleged attack.

He also did not discuss details of the allegations, though he noted the players "were booked on criminal sexual conduct in the third degree. And that usually does involve penetration, nonconsensual penetration."

On the day of the incident, the woman did go to a hospital for a sexual-assault examination, and was offered services from victim advocates, according to a police report.

Early Friday, she flagged down a university officer who was on patrol to report the rape, Hestness said.

Bizarre story about a Spartan from a few years ago. A 28-year old former state heavyweight wrestling champ and DL in college allegedly threw a 66-year old guy off a third story balcony.

Re: Friends and family said Thompson, who was once the nation's top-rated defensive end prospect, suffers from mental illness.

Sad story, kind of reminds me of another "top rated" DL prospect who was from Ohio State that had similiar problems (i. e. mental and legal): Alonzo Spellman

Alonzo was diagnosed as having a bipolar disorder.

BYU players suspended after arrests in water-balloon dispute

OREM, Utah (AP) ? Brigham Young linebacker Terrance Hooks and tight end Vic So'oto were suspended from spring drills after they were accused of breaking into two apartments in search of someone who threw a water balloon.

BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall suspended Hooks and So'oto for the final week of spring practice, including the Blue-White scrimmage April 14, and possibly longer.

Hooks and So'oto were arrested early Saturday on suspicion of burglary, Orem police Lt. Doug Edwards said. Both were released on bail Monday and an initial court court appearance was scheduled for April 16.

The Utah County Attorney received the case Monday and was considering what charges were warranted.

The players were trying to find two people who hit Hooks' girlfriend with a water balloon from an apartment balcony after a dance in the parking lot, Edwards said.
