Mother of stabbed punter: He's doing the best he can to handle it
By PAT GRAHAM, AP Sports Writer
May 17, 2007
GREELEY, Colo. (AP) -- Florence Mendoza squirmed in a fourth-row bench Thursday as lawyers discussed the case against the former Northern Colorado backup punter accused of trying to kill her son.
"I don't think anybody would like to sit and hear what went on the night that their son was hurt," Mendoza said after a motions hearing for Mitch Cozad, charged with attempted first-degree murder in a knife attack on her son Rafael, the starting punter.

"It's hard (being here)," she said.
Rafael Mendoza was attacked on Sept. 11 in a dimly lit parking lot outside his apartment in Evans, a small town adjacent to Greeley. He suffered a 3- to 5-inch-deep wound in his kicking leg.
Cozad, of Wheatland, Wyo., has pleaded not guilty and remains free on $500,000 bail. If found guilty of attempted murder, he could face up to 48 years in prison.
Police have said they believe Cozad stabbed Mendoza to try to get the starting job, and the case drew quick comparisons to the assault by Tonya Harding's hit man on Nancy Kerrigan.
Cozad's case is scheduled to go to trial July 30. A pretrial readiness conference was moved up to July 2, the last day the judge will accept a plea agreement.

Who Stole The Fulmer Cup from Montana State!

Who Stole The Fulmer Cup from Montana State!

Seriously, murder, cocaine peddling and a past meth ring which involved an assistant coach and Montana State isn't the de facto and perennial holder of the Fulmer Cup? Something is deeply wrong, inquiring minds need to know how this travesty of justice has transpired!

Oh, and their head coach got the axe today - which ranks somewhere around 0 on the surprise scale.

Montana State fires Kramer as football coach
By SARAH COOKE, Associated Press Writer
May 18, 2007
Montana State fired football coach Mike Kramer on Friday, several days after another former Bobcats athlete was arrested on drug charges.
Kramer was 40-43 in seven seasons at the Bozeman school, including an 8-5 mark last year. He led the Bobcats to three Big Sky Conference titles and three NCAA playoff appearances.

......
"It starts with leadership," athletic director Peter Fields said. "When you look at our football program's recent history, it is apparent that its direction does not fit with what this university is all about."
......
Former wide receiver Rick Gatewood was arrested this week on drug charges and is accused of using his athletic scholarship money to traffic cocaine from California in the Bozeman area. His brother also faces drug charges.
Gatewood is the sixth former Montana State athlete arrested or charged with crimes involving drugs or murder in the past year.
......
Montana State cornerback Andre Fuller pleaded not guilty in March to charges he sold cocaine to a confidential informant last June. He was suspended from the football team while the case is investigated.
Former wide receiver Edward Sullivan of Carlsbad, Calif., and Derrick Davis Jr., a former cornerback from Santa Monica, Calif., also have been charged with selling drugs.
And last June, former redshirt football player John Lebrum and former Bobcat basketball player Branden Miller were charged with murder and kidnapping in the shooting death of suspected drug dealer Jason Wright. They have pleaded not guilty and are scheduled for trial in the coming months.
In October 2004, former assistant head football coach Joe O'Brien was sentenced to four years in prison for his role in a methamphetamine distribution conspiracy.
Who, really, could top all of that? They have out U'd Da U for crying out loud. Fulmer? Clearly a rank amateur.

Marijuana charge dismissed against ND quarterback

Tribune correspondent report

A misdemeanor marijuana possession charge against University of Notre Dame quarterback Demetrius Jones was dismissed Wednesday after testimony from another person indicated that the marijuana did not belong to Jones.

According to court documents in LaPorte Superior Court III, the registered owner of the vehicle Jones was driving on May 17, when Jones was arrested during a traffic stop on the Indiana Toll Road by Indiana State Police, testified that he allowed Jones to borrow his vehicle to drive from Chicago to South Bend.

To the best of the car owner’s knowledge, court documents said, Jones did not know there was marijuana in the ashtray.

Report: Lawlor Facing DUI Charge

By FOS Staff

Posted Jun 4, 2007

ESPN Radio 1450 is reporting that State College police arrested Penn State fullback Dan Lawlor on DUI charges at 3:06 a.m. April 28.

The station said court records indicate that Lawlor was pulled over by officers who witnessed him making an illegal right-hand turn from West Beaver Avenue to South Allen Street. The records say Lawlor turned while the light was red, which is not permitted at that intersection.

The records said the arresting officer detected alcohol on Lawlor's breath and he had bloodshot eyes and a flushed face. Lawlor told officers that he had four or five beers and he had sipped some Crown Royal and Coke earlier in the evening, according to the records.

Lawlor was taken to Mount Nittany Medical Center where a blood-alcohol test was performed. His blood-alcohol concentration was 0.126. The legal limit in Pennsylvania is 0.080.
