 He could play in that main event 1000 more times and not win it once. Look at his results excluding the 03 main event and he is a donkey. And not really trying to be a dick, but is kind of an accepted thing that he sucks and got extremely lucky to win the main event.

The real issue here is the fact that somebody is actually wearing sunglasses indoors. That is grounds for immediate boxing of the ears. Almost as bad as those fuckers that walk around all day with a bluetooth in their ear when not talking into it.

There's more to a tell than someone's eyes.

I don't need to see someone's eyes to tell if they are bluffing.
You'll see that not all tells have to do with someone's eyes.
Clearly, but they're still hiding a major one for a reason.
Again, if you haven't seen Rounders, watch it.
I will check out Rounders, though. Sounds interesting.
Usually when I see someone roll-up in shades, I know they will probably be the first one out of the game.

Chris Moneymaker they are not.
Helmuth, that Cowboy hat dude, and many other very successful pros wear shades. If someone can't pull off a bluff without blinders for his opponents, then he shouldn't be playing poker.

Why would people playing for large amounts of money use every advantage possible?

Gee I dunno.
Yes, because that's what I'm asking :roll2:, not why it is permitted

So honestly how horrible is everyone else? I mean if you bank a couple million off winning one tourney and retire...I still call that more successful then the average american...Call me strange for not antagonizing people for accomplishments I couldn't ever achieve..Aww that's right this is the internet. Serious biz.....

Check out Hellmuth's book "Read 'Em and Reap" hell of a read on picking up tells. Done with the help of a former FBI agent whose job was to tell when suspects were lying, and the guy did a damned good job apparently. In all actuality, IIRC from the book, according to the agent, the eye's aren't that important. Posture, hands, breathing, all kinds of other things are bigger than eyes.

Guys, "tells" are the most overrated aspect in all of poker. Most poker pros do not rely on them (unless there is something blatantly obvious or you are playing against some very inexperienced players). The real game is learning how to read betting patterns....not by noticing if someone eats an oreo cookie when he has a monster hand (for you Rounder buffs). Spend your time picking up betting tendancies (i.e. does someone bet small or big when they are looking to get paid off or when they are bluffing, etc.).

You should really give your voice of reason schtick a rest.

In terms of a professional poker player, Moneymaker is not a good a player. If you watched the tournament he won you would have seen he not only got extremely lucky, but had to naviagte through a much smaller field than any main event champ since. In fact, since the 03 main event, he has less than $300,00 in tournament winnings.

With great luck and a general knowledge of the game a player could win anything from a big pot against Phil Ivey to a tourament, but it doesn't make them better than the people who can consistently do it.

So then poker is just littered with indoor sunglass offenders, not folks trying to hide their eyes?

To me its a lot like wearing shades in baseball. Obviously at one point it had a functional use and in a lot of cases still does. However by and large its turned more into a copy cat fashion thing than a functional need. In baseball you don't see the old fashioned flip downs that much anymore instead you see a lot of guys walking around with regular shades on the outside of their hat in the field. Completely cosmetic because there is no way in hell they can get them on before a ball gets to them.

I consider Daniel Negranu(sp?) the best all around poker player in the world. He doesn't wear shades or do anything at all to conceal his face (he wears a ball cap like anyone else on occasion). Also, you could put a fucking NASA space suit on with the visor down and he'll still tell you what cards you are holding based on how you are betting and the general situation of the game.

Also like others have said, face tells are overrated. Mostly tells are picked up in some sort of physical mannerisim ie a guy checks his hole cards twice if he's hit a draw or doesn't check them at all when he's bluffing type of thing.

Bottom line to me is its not cheating because it really doesn't give anyone an advantage.

P.S. For the sake of accuracy Moneymaker didn't invent shit, he simply got 3 power ball lottery winners in a row lucky and in conjunction with ESPN and the Internet made a zillion people utter the immortal phrase "if he can do it, so can I". The real pro's love him because he's brought more donkey's to the tables than anyone in the history of the sport.

Actually that term was never brought up once before "fucking terrible" was by yourself. Anytime something happens, that someone doesn't "want" to happen or tries to negate an actual fact that happened..*insert excuse why it happened*. Saying he played well wouldn't reinforce the idea you claim. However, he only made 300,000,since then does..Congrats. Lemme know when you pick up that small amount playing pokerstars..You could easily use the "lucky" tag with each individual player. If not the term "bad luck" wouldn't really have a meaning.

 Just because I can't cover a D1 WR doesn't mean Morgan :slappy: Trent is a good cornerback.
