For Christ's sake, dude's name is "Plaxico."

Forget about the "dumb" ones. Have ANY of you out there, ever met a "smart" person named "Plaxico"?

Peace.

Give me a break. Don't hide in the shadows on this one and say what you mean like the Vick thread.

I find it funny dudes like you coming hating on any and all minorities that get arrested and then when Matt Jones gets popped it's crickets.

FWIW, some of the blame on this situation falls on the club for letting him go past the metal detectors Remy Ma style knowing he was carryin'

I've heard the Matt Jones comparison a couple times now...even NFL football players.

Matt Jones isn't a story, because NOBODY knows who he is. I wonder how many people have googled Matt Jones, just trying to figure out who he is and what he did.

Total agreement on names and generalizations.

What do you think of the name Myron, WW?

Matt Jones was a 1st round pick and big name player to people who followed college football from his days at Arkansas. If you're into football you know who Matt "I'm the original Vince Young" Jones is as a player.

Matt Jones get busted with two 8-balls worth of coke in his car (a felony amount) and he's cutting some up with a foot locker credit credit but apparently he's exempt from scorn.

Again, nobody knows who Matt Jones is. Without looking, name 20 first round picks from 2005 or 2006. And he hasn't done a whole lot to become recognizeable in the NFL.

Plaxico Burress > Matt Jones in media attention for many reasons.

1. New York
2. He's actually good.
3. He shot himself.

To further illustrate:

If you asked 100 casual sports fan, pre Cheddar Bob incident, who Plaxico Burress was and who Matt Jones was....Plaxico would rate significantly higher than Jones. It wouldn't even be close.

Keep in mind, Matt Leinart was ripped for partying with college chicks...not even illegal, but b/c Leinart is recognizeable, and will draw ratings, it became a huge issue. Unfortunately for the Caucasian race, we just have very few players in the league. And guys like Brady and Manning aren't the types to sneak glocks into the club. Although Brady caught some heat for having an out of wedlock baby.....how many other NFL'ers get ripped for that? With exception to those having 7 or more kids (Travis Henry).

Obviously Plaxico is more famous but Matt Jones is hardly the Texans 4 string receiver. Any one that knows football knows who he is

I disagree. We use a sports message board. How many casual fans do that? I consider my family spoorts fans...if I asked them who Matt Jones is, maybe one of 3 brothers would know, and my dad wouldn't. But they're sports fans.

Put Plaxico on the Jags and Jones on the Giants, and the circumstances become different. New York media covereing a super bowl champ, and an All-Pro player, who just signed a 30 mill contract. Of course it's a massive story.

Matt Jones is the second or third WR on a crappy team this year, and a team that doesn't throw the ball.

If Matt Jones were a popular player, his story would have been huge though. But people don't care b/c he is Matt Jones.

I guess it's agree to disagree, Jones was a 1st round pick, college star and leading receiver this season for the Jags.

What exactly did Pacman Jones ever do be an NFL star besides get arrested a bunch?

i don't know dayton. i'm staying out of the names and race thing, but when i think of an athlete getting caught with coke the word "thuggin" doesn't come to mind (even though he had an inordinate amount on him). when i hear of an athlete in a club with a gun, i think "thuggin".

He got arreseted a bunch...exactly. He became a household name. That's exactly my point.

And just when the Pac Man storyline was going away, he ends up on the Cowboys.

Replace Matt Jones with Matt Cassel or Jason Witten, and the circumstances are different. Again, how much media coverage did Matt Leinart garner by having a good time? If your name draws viewership, it will be plastered everywhere.

As a P.S....it isn't as if ESPN didn't cover Matt Jones being arrested, or run his name on the bottom line. It just didn't kick up a dust storm so they let it die. Plaxico putting a hole in his leg is a huge story. Of course it is going to be stuffed down our throats. It isn't a racial thing, it's a ratings thing.

I see Myron and I think Rhodes Scholar

That was kind of my point...Myron isn't an everyday name, and he's unbelievably intelligent and accomplished. Judging ones character and intelligence based on a name is silly.

Exactly!
In fact the lawyers are now claiming the illegal weapon he was packing was used as an instrument of self-defense.

"Your honor, after all he shot the man who was shooting at him."

Damn - that's some good lawyering. :banger:

If he would retain me, I'd sue himself for damages.

I don't get on Plaxico because he's a minority, it's because he's stupid as fuck. I don't think anyone, white, black, yellow, silver, green with red stripes, should be carrying an illegal gun for "personal protection" in their pants pocket out in public. And yes, absolutely, the club shares full responsibility for winking him through the metal detector with it. Or just letting him in with no patdown or ignoring what they found, whatever the case may have been, the share the "you dumb fuck" stigma from me.

And I didn't know Matt Jones. I had to look him up. I'm an average sports fan. What he did was stupid as shit too.

When will pro athletes learn they have a job that doesn't allow them to do whatever the hell they want to do in their personal lives? Of course, to be fair, ANY celebrity of any caliber in this fair country of ours feels above the law so it's not out of line pro athletes feel same way. Doesn't make it right, however.
