Pittsburgh Steelers (official thread)

So what did we think of that draft Steeler fans? I'm just slightly o.K. with the 2 LB's although it obviously pains me to see a scUMer on the team.

That 3rd round reach for Spaeth was a total fucking head sctratcher. Any thoughts on that one? I didn't think that was an area of need.

The first two picks I am fine with. The Spaeth pick is puzzling to me when the Steelers have other glaring needs. I wanted them to take a OL, RB, or CB. The Steelers don't even use their star TE to the fullest. This Spaeth looks more like a blocker and I would rather have a more athletic 2nd TE. There is only so much a 2nd TE can do. In fairness, this is a new regime and new OC. At least we can say he is an upgrade over Tuman. Maybe we will see more 2 TE sets like New England and Dallas. Arians has said he likes to use 3 TE sets. It will be interesting to see if the Steelers take Pittman in the 4th. All of the Steelers picks so far visited Pittsburgh and Pittman visited also.

I'm not sure as to how much of an improvement he is over Tuman other than the fact he's not from scUM. The 3 TE set thing makes sense but it seems awfully high to address that need. Who knows? I'll defer to Colbert and company untill they give me a reason not to.

I'm not a fan of Timmons or Woodley but I understand the need. The Spaeth pick makes absolutely no sense.

Edit: Now a punter in the 4th? :slappy:

Edit 2: And they traded up to get him. :slappy: :slappy:

I could defend the Spaeth pick, stretch or no, but a Punter with your 4th round selection - didn't the Steelers need other kinds of help (like say a good running back)?

Gave up a 4th and a 6th to get him no less.

I thought the needs were OL, RB and DB depth after LB? Time will tell but this is a fiasco on the surface.

I'm curious, how could you defend the Spaeth pick?

The Steelers could use a running back, receiver, corner, or even an offensive lineman considering they lost Hartings and the whole Faneca situation.

:crazy:WTF???? The Spaeth pick looks worse now. Allen Barbre were there for the taking at #20. I thought the Steelers were going take Ramirez when they traded up. Faneca, Simmons, and Starks contracts are up after 2007 and Hartings retired. Good pick or not, why trade up for a punter?

Well the Chargers just got Chandler the TE from Iowa with #129 after we take Spaeth with #77. I've seen them both play 4 years in the B10 and I don't see that big a difference let alone the need issue. :grr:

John Murphy's take: He passes the eye-test with rave reviews and even cut out some of the extra bulk and body fat leading up to the Senior Bowl. He has a long upper body frame that if he desires could easily carry 290-plus pounds. In spite of being tall and lean, he is not stiff and very athletic both off the snap and in pursuit. McBean is still learning both technique wise and overall in the way that he goes about his business as the two-year stint at junior college kept him from having a set schedule for training, eating habits and fundamental skills. He flashed an impressive blend of quickness, power and raw skill level in 1-on-1 drills during the Senior Bowl practices. He can come off high at times and gives away too much of his body to blockers, but uses his long arms and athleticism to work back into the play and hardly ever stayed blocked this past season.
Many evaluators believe that he can become a force at DE in a 3-4 as well as provide very good push up the middle or on the outside if selected by a 4-3 squad. The teams that like him are really excited about his upside, but other franchises feel that he will be a perennial tease.
