Celebrating 75 years of Steelers
Friday, June 29, 2007

By Joe Frollo Jr.

CANTON When Franco Harris lifted a deflected pass just off the Three Rivers Stadium turf on Dec. 23, 1972, he brought with it more than just a touchdown.

Harris elevated a franchise and raised the hopes of a city desperately in need of it.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are celebrating their 75th season in the NFL this fall. After long years of hard times in western Pennsylvania both on and off the football field, people can point to Harris? Immaculate Reception as the moment it all turned around.

?The thing about 1972 was there was no buildup to it. There wasn?t any anticipation,? Harris said. ?Nobody in their wildest dreams thought we?d be one game from the Super Bowl.?

Woodley getting the attetion of staff

PG

Rookie linebacker LaMarr Woodley is going to be one heck of a pass rusher. It was only the first day of drills and the running backs hate linebackers on backs drill -- a pass protection, one-on-one drill -- but Woodley ate Najeh Davenport for lunch, twice. That followed up a great spring for Woodley. "I thought he did well in that drill," coach Mike Tomlin said. "He showed what he's capable of. He's a rush man. It's somewhat of a mismatch sometimes when LaMarr Woodley gets on a running back, so really you kind of expected him to get after some folks and I think he handled himself and handled the drill pretty well."

Steelers' rookie punter brings linebacker mentality
LATROBE, Pa. — At a muscular 6-foot-3, 230 pounds, Pittsburgh Steelers rookie Daniel Sepulveda looks more like a linebacker than the punter he really is.
Sepulveda says he posted time of 4.43 seconds when running the 40-yard dash for NFL scouts this past spring. That's faster than either of the two linebackers the Steelers drafted with their first two picks this year, Lawrence Timmons and LaMarr Woodley.

Filet, water top menu when Steelers on road

Sunday, August 19, 2007 4:04 AM
By Alan Robinson

Associated Press

PITTSBURGH -- When the Pittsburgh Steelers go on the road, their equipment managers get filet mignon, even if it must be eaten on plastic plates.

There is water, water everywhere. And nobody asks for a suite, not even owner Dan Rooney. But Rooney gets foam pillows only -- no down pillows are allowed.
The Steelers' 17-page hotel contract rider that lists their requirements down to the tiniest detail was leaked to the Web site The Smoking Gun this week. The NFL regular season hasn't started yet, but the Steelers have played two road exhibition games.

Steelers acquire kick returner Rossum from Falcons for draft pick

Yahoo

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- The Pittsburgh Steelers acquired cornerback-kick returner Allen Rossum from the Atlanta Falcons on Saturday for a conditional 2008 draft pick. Rossum, a 2005 Pro Bowl player as a return specialist, holds Falcons team records for kickoff and punt return yards and also had two punt return touchdowns. The former Notre Dame player broke into the NFL as a third-round pick with Philadelphia in 1998 before being traded to Green Bay in 2000. He signed with Atlanta as a free agent in 2002.
with the trouble that they've had finding a KR i think this could be a pretty good pickup

Reportcard: Game 2

PPG

GERRY DULAC grades the Steelers' effort in a 26-3 victory against Buffalo yesterday at Heinz Field. The report is broken down into defensive and offensive positions and coaching.

QUARTERBACK = B
RUNNING BACKS = A
RECEIVERS = B
OFFENSIVE LINE = A-
DEFENSIVE LINE = B
LINEBACKERS = A
SECONDARY = A
SPECIAL TEAMS = B-
COACHING = B-

Mike Tomlin became only the third Steelers coach in history to start 2-0, but not without some snafus. Roethlisberger appeared to have problems getting the plays from the bench and there was some miscommunication on offense, forcing the Steelers to use all three timeouts in the first half. And nobody noticed that McGee stepped out of bounds on a 63-yard kick return that led to the Bills' only field goal.

Tomlin makes good call in leaving Steelers alone

From wire reports

Gene J. Puskar Associated Press
Bills quarterback J.P. Losman, being tackled by Nick Eason and Larry Foote, top, never got comfortable against the Steelers.

Troy Polamalu believes new coach Mike Tomlin's best move with the Pittsburgh Steelers defense was doing nothing.
Tomlin, brought up in the 4-3 defense while coaching Tampa Bay's defensive backs and a strong proponent of it while running Minnesota's defense last season, probably wanted to do some overhauling when Pittsburgh hired him in January.
Don't all new coaches want to make an impact immediately with their style and their scheme?

Rossum proves he was worth the trade

PPG

Tomlin traded a 2008 conditional draft choice to the Atlanta Falcons on the day he was preparing his final 53-man roster to acquire Rossum, and the reason was on display in the first quarter at Heinz Field, moments after the San Francisco 49ers had taken a 3-0 lead.
It wasn't just that Rossum returned the ensuing kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown, the Steelers' first kickoff return for a touchdown in almost five years. It was the manner in which he turned what was supposed to be a left return into an easy touchdown through the middle of the 49ers' coverage unit, never changing speeds and never being touched by a San Francisco defender.

Game 3 Report Card

Post Gazette

Coaching=A

Mike Tomlin continues to keep the team prepared and focused, producing a third consecutive lopsided win and giving the Steelers a 3-0 record for the first time since 1992. What's more, the Steelers received touchdowns from the offense, defense and special teams, another sign he is getting production from all three areas. His impact on the team is not to be discounted.
