Pirates tidbits (2011)

Primanti's, Peppi's, whatever, go eat already.

The Bucs just got a walk off win over Arizona to move to 30-30 on the season. Being at .500 through 60 games is a big deal in 21st century Pittsburgh. :pirate1: :banger:

First time since 2005, I think I'll celebrate with a Primanti's Cheese Steak...

With Doumit, Jaramillo and now Snyder on the DL the Bucs are down to the back up AAA catcher and a AA catcher. One more goes down and I'm dusting off the mitt and heading to the Burgh.

A couple of Red Sox cast offs I never heard off until a few weeks ago playing catcher, but the Bucs continue to tread water. Nice start from Maholm earns a split with the Mets.

Being 32-33 through 65 games isn't the worst thing Pirates fans have had to endure the past 18 years, not by a long shot.

It's June 14th, and the Pirates have now won more road games than they did all of last season after winning at Houston, 1-0. They're also back at .500 thru 66 games. :pirate2:

I swear I never heard of Mike McHenry or Dusty Brown until this month, both were long time Boston minor leaguers, but they are the two catchers on the Pirates roster these days. Where's Smokey Burgess when you need him?

When teams like Boston come to Pittsburgh their fans see it as a cheap trip to see a nice ballpark and watch their boys roll it up over the woeful Pirates. Phillies fans watched their team lose 2 of 3 a few weeks ago, and Red Sox fans learned tonight that it isn't quite as easy as it has been for several years.

The Bucs aren't back, but they aren't doormats so far this year, either.

Pirates 3
Bosox 1

FINAL

38-37 through 75 games. :pirate1:

Back home from the Burgh and a PNC Park record crowd, watched the Buccos beat Boston, again. Just like last night, Hanrahan got Adrian for the final out.

Pirates 6
Red Sox 4

Got home from Toronto tonight having watched the Bucs split 2 with the Jays (among other things) and while thinking about another fun trip to one of my favorite cities I'm watching the Pirates win the rubber match - their first road interleague series win since 2003.

Frankly, what the Bucs have done through 80 games is fairly remarkable, all things considered:

-The top 3 catchers are on the DL and have been for a month or longer to date.
-Top pick 3B Pedro Alvarez has done nothing, and has been on the DL for over a month and counting.
- LF and leadoff hitter Jose Tabata is on the DL.
- 1B acquisition Lyle Overbay has flat out sucked.
- Guys like Brandon Wood, Josh Harrison, and Mike McKenry have been playing regularly due to aforementioned injuries.
- Alex Presley and Chase d'Arnaud = rookie call ups = are filling the top 2 spots in the batting order.

And yet, Pittsburgh is 41-39 through 80 games. I can't explain it. The SP (same guys as last year) has been much better, and they are 37-0 when leading after 8 innings, so they haven't blown games late. I don't know how they're doing it but I hope it continues. :pirate1:

Two wins over the Astros and the Bucs are 45-41 through 86 games, their best mark at this point since 1992. Yes, that is the last time they had a winning season (96-66).

Didn't see this coming but enjoying it while it lasts.

Come from behind win over the Cubs tonight clinches a winning record at the all star break for the first time since - when else - 1992, the last winning season. :pirate2:
