Report: D'Antoni out as Suns coach

Bottom line is you don't put together that kind of talent and don't win. Shaq, Nash, Stat, Hill, Barbosa, Diaw, Giricek, Bell...somethings wrong, cause they all can ball. So what's wrong? The system? That will get the blame... not Steve Kerr, who doesn't win in his first year. D'Antoni who has yet to win. He even speaks defeated. I am like 95% gut instinct sure...that if they lose to the Spurs...4-0 or 4-1... he's gone. And you're right, they're crumbling...they need to pull their heads out of their a$.

SAN ANTONIO - Nothing but the playoff losses has intensified the talk about Suns coach Mike D'Antoni's job.
There has been no recent discord between him and the front office, other than the lack of a full vote of confidence from management.
But a late report by Jack McCallum at sportsillustrated.com says Mike D'Antoni will not return as coach.

With two years and $8.5 million left on his contract, D'Antoni is unlikely to be fired. If he returns, it could be with concessions to change. But there is also the possibility that he leaves of his own accord, especially with a perceived lack of support - and interest from New York and Chicago, both of which have vacancies. There is also the chance Toronto President Bryan Colangelo fired Sam Mitchell to hire the coach he brought to Phoenix from Italy.

Stupid IMO...

It's probably a good thing for D'antonio.....he can go rebuild somewhere else and make them contenders.

He will have to restructure his successful style to fit the current pieces in Phoenix. I think he could go to Toronto and do great things with a mobile big man in Chris Bosh, and a PG who can run it in TJ Ford.

Yeah I agree...Think Stern has taken a step back after what happened last year...

If Stern uses common sense lat year and doesn't suspend Amare, the Suns most likely win the Western Conference Championship and the NBA title.

If that happens, they don't make a stupid trade this year that makes them a worse team. They defend the title with the core of last years squad.

Suns coach Mike D'Antoni will interview with Chicago and New York about their head coaching vacancies in a sign that he and the Suns brass may have irreconcilable differences.
D'Antoni and Suns General Manager Steve Kerr were not available for comment but a franchise source confirmed a KTAR-AM report that Suns management had given D'Antoni permission to interview with other teams. Kerr said last week that he would not give any other NBA team permission to talk to D'Antoni until their situation was resolved.
D'Antoni met with Kerr and Suns Managing Partner Robert Sarver for more than two hours Friday in what Kerr described as a "productive meeting." They planned to part for a few days and reconvene this week. But this weekend, the parties spoke again by phone, and now D'Antoni can talk to other teams about a job.

Mike D'Antoni has accepted an offer to become the new head coach of the New York Knicks, a league source said this morning.
D'Antoni told the source that he will end his 4 1/2-season run with Phoenix to join New York President Donnie Walsh in an attempt to turn around the Knicks, the NBA's highest-paid team that went 23-59 last season.
D'Antoni also had been interviewing for the job with Chicago and met with Bulls owner Jerry Reinsdorf on Friday in the Valley, but D'Antoni had settled his mind on the Knicks since his 57th birthday Thursday, according to another source
Walsh flew to Phoenix on Monday to meet with D'Antoni, and his experience as a GM and pledged patience were motivating factors for D'Antoni, along with the fact that Chicago would not compete financially with the New York offer.
SI.com is reporting that the terms of the contract are for four years and $24 million.
The agreement removes Phoenix from the contract it had with D'Antoni that would have paid him $8.5 million for the next two seasons. The Suns will now search for a new head coach and staff with D'Antoni taking all or some of his assistants, to New York with him.

Have fun trying to run your system with Curry and Randolph.

Will the Knicks be paying 3 HC's next year? Sadly D'Antoni might be the lowest paid. Seems like Chicago would have been an easier team to win with, but no one pays like the Knicks.

He might be good enough to get them to the playoffs next year in a weak eastern conferenence. One good thin for the franchise is that they have a lot of contracts coming off the books after 2009. He'll have a down year next year, by his standards, but the guy knows basketball. He'll make New York relevant again by 2011, which really isn't that far away.

Any time you can go into San Antonio and come out with a victory, it is a good thing. I think Terry Porter has this team on the right track. I'm looking forward to seeing how the new guys gel with the old guys and what becomes of the offense. They played pretty well tonight.

You're right that it doesn't matter until they prove themselves in the playoffs. Terry Porter went to his bench quite a bit which us Suns fans aren't used to. Hopefully that will help keep Nash, Hill and Shaq fresher throughout the season and give us some depth when playoff time comes around.

I'm definitely looking foward to this season. But then again I was looking forward to ASU football and now that makes me want to puke. Hopefully the Suns will give their fans a different result.

Will I get shot for mentioning Mike D'Antoni in the 08-09 Suns thread? Anyone think he's a good enough coach to get the Knicks to the playoffs in his first season? The Knicks put up some serious points tongiht...first game obviosuly, but a much different tempo and attitude....
