Ohio State women's basketball: In her home finale, Prahalis sets school scoring record

Samantha Prahalis said goodbye to the home fans last night in Value City Arena with the same kind of flourish that has marked her remarkable career with the Ohio State women?s basketball team.

On senior night, Prahalis set an OSU record by scoring 42 points to lead the No. 8-ranked Buckeyes to an 81-56 Big Ten victory over Minnesota in front of 5,344 appreciative fans.

Prahalis notched 22 points in the first half and 20 more in the second to break the record set by Katie Smith against Idaho State on Dec. 11, 1994. Prahalis also had six rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Hollywood never imagined a better ending.

?It was special tonight,? Prahalis said. ?I guess God wanted it to be special, so it was special. I just got into a pretty good rhythm. It was almost like one of those nights where don?t really see your defender. You get hot and you keep hitting.?

With the win, the Buckeyes (24-4, 11-4) can finish no lower than second place in the conference regular-season standings.

Prahalis dropped in two free throws with 2:27 to play to set the program and arena record and left to a standing ovation. She was 15 for 27 from the field, 7 of 12 from three-point distance and 5 of 5 from the free-throw line.

?I don?t know who wrote the script,? OSU coach Jim Foster said. ?But somebody did. And, you haven?t even talked about zero turnovers. Think about it. She was all over the place.?

Still stinging from an 84-66 loss at Penn State on Monday, the Buckeyes opened aggressively against the Gophers. Prahalis was in the middle of everything.

?She was helping on defense, second-leading rebounder, led us in assists and then scored the points,? Foster said.

Never have seen a women's game rebroadcast so I doubt if you will see this one again. Maybe if it had been for the BIG championship there might be a possibility but I even doubt that.
