Simmons signed and sealed: Mott delivers All-American guard to Ohio State

by Jared Field Wednesday May 07, 2008, 5:19 PM

Holly Hart | The Flint JournalMott Community College's Jeremie Simmons made it official on Wednesday: The 6-2 All-American guard will play for Thad Matta at Ohio State next season.

Jeremie Simmons spent two years on the basketball courts and in the classrooms of Mott Community College, and only two seconds thinking about what he'll miss most about his the experience.
"Just knowing we were going to win every game by about 30," quipped Simmons, the national junior college player of the year, who on Tuesday signed and sent his letter of intent to play basketball at the Ohio State University. "But it was a great experience (at Mott). I appreciate a lot of things more now than I ever did."
Simmons, who verbally committed to the Buckeyes late last month after a two-day campus visit, was relieved to finally make it official.
"I went through the whole season thinking about where I would end up," said Simmons, who led Mott to its second consecutive NJCAA national championship in March. "It's a load off my shoulders."
Simmons, who averaged 21 points, five assists, four rebounds and three steals as a sophomore, did not have the Buckeyes on his radar until a month ago.
"It was an odd recruitment, really," said Ohio State head coach Thad Matta, whose Buckeyes won the 2008 NIT Championship. "We got in relatively late on Jeremie."

I was reading a Delaware State preview article and noticed that some of the players and Thad referred to Simmons as "A.O." and I was curious if anyone knew when they called him that:huh:

i believe it stands for Automatic Offense

No offense to PJ, and I thought Jamar was serviceable at the point last year, but I think Jeremie and Noopy are going to be a much better tandem at the point than last year.

It will be nice to have a PG who can score, but doesn't feel the pressure to carry the team offensively.

And it's entertaining just watching Noopy whip passes around the perimeter. He threw the simplest pass on the perimeter, and I immediately thought "damn, that's a chest pass."

i dont want to call you out but jamar played 37+ mins a game last year. thats a mountain of minutes...
this year the team is longer, more athletic and have more experience on the wing. the point guard will benefit from that. well see how this year shakes out. simmons looked good tonite. certainly had a nice shot but this wasnt tom izzo and sparty...

my point is, it helps the team that the PG doesn't have to conentrate on scoring. That hurt the team badly last year..our ball-handler also had to create for himself and score consistently for the team to be successful.

Simmons will clearly be able to score, but they aren't going to need him too focus on it. Not like Jamar did last year.

I know this is Jeremie's thread, but I get a kick out of everyone who keeps calling Crater 'Noopy'.

He even said in another article I read that he has outgrown the name of 'Noopy', and in that very same article, about 3 sentences later someone on his own team calls Crater 'Noopy.' Sounds like growing pains.

Congrats to Simmons on his quick acclimation to Buckeye Basketball. He came down the court and hit two 3's like it was nobody's business. I'm looking forward to more of the A.O.

Jamar was serviceable at the point last year
I know this is Simmons thread and that JO replied to this statement but since Butler was one of my favorite basketball players I just can't let that statement go without replying. He did almost everything for that team last year and if it wasn't for him their record would have been horrendous last year. I have made some stupid statements on this board but saying that Jamar was "serviceable" is just asinine:!

Simmons looked like he had a very nice stroke last night but I want to see a little more of him especially against teams that play man-to-man. Most of the shots last night did not come off of the dribble so I need to see more.

He even said in another article I read that he has outgrown the name of 'Noopy'
Also, please see above. Crater no longer wants to be called that name:( and if you're going to follow the team you really need to get to know the players names.

AO hit a pull-up 3 in the exhibition game, so I think he's fine shooting whether off the catch or dribble.

One thing that bothers me a little about him is he seems to pick up some ticky-tack fouls. I remember reading a report about one of his JC tournament games last year where he had to go to the bench because he picked up a couple cheap fouls. From the exhibition game and the DSU game, it seems that he's susceptible to picking up cheap fouls - this hasn't been a problem yet, but it's something that needs to get corrected. OSU prides itself on not fouling, especially keeping other teams off the FT line, so the less cheap fouls the better. At least OSU has a capable back-up this year.

I certainly hope that he doesn't have to play 40 minutes every game. Hopefully, Offult can play a little PG but I am not certain how much he ever played the role in high school. Simmons just can't play 40 minutes every game for the rest of the season. I guess maybe PJ will start getting some PT at that position but he wasn't seeing any playing time whatsoever so just makes you wonder what's the problem. This is not a very good situation at all.
