PG Jeremie Simmons (official thread)

I'm sure he hasn't had a break out game yet. You can't teach PG passing. That's a gift from god. Vision and awareness aren't coach able skills. I think he's adjusting to division one basketball. Not everyone is Steve Francis.

Look at Mott where he came from. They're a fine JC program but other than Simmons they're putting out mid-major talent. Kevin Tiggs down at East Tennessee State is probably the best player they've put out and he was the DII Juco player of the year.
i agree and disagree on passing. it can be amplified by coaching. good passer can be taught to be great (fundamentals, timing, footwork, positioning, spacing, etc) enhance or limits one abiliities.

College basketball: Simmons asks out of starting lineup, then comes off the bench to lead Ohio State past Penn State
Associated Press

COLUMBUS ? Jeremie Simmons went to Ohio State?s coaching staff on Sunday and suggested that P.J. Hill start in his place.
It ended up being an ingenious move for Simmons, for Hill ? and for the Buckeyes.

Simmons came off the bench to score 14 points and Hill added a career-high 13, and the two also led a second-half surge as Ohio State beat Penn State 73-59 Tuesday night to end a three-game losing skid.

?I?m a real person. I understand that P.J., he works hard every day,? Simmons said of his selfless act. ?I knew he would start us off strong on the defensive end so I wanted him to start.?

Simmons scored the last five points of the first half to give Ohio State a lead, then hit three 3-pointers as the Buckeyes (18-8, 8-7 Big Ten) took control by scoring 25 of the game?s final 35 points.

?It was basically they were collapsing on ET (Evan Turner),? Simmons said. ?I had good looks and was able to knock them down.?

Since no one has posted this I guess I will. When a guy asks his coach to take him out of the starting lineup because he is not playing well says a great deal about that player and what Simmons did was a very unselfish act and truly demonstrates that it is a team player:bow:

Meet a Buckeye: Jeremie Simmons

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

PHOTO (top): Jeremie Simmons, making a play on the defensive end here, has improved his contributions on the other end, averaging a conference-best 53.6 percent from beyond the 3-point line. (Jonathan Quilter, Dispatch)

Jeremie Simmons isn't one to talk about himself or his game. That much was evident when he led the Ohio State men's basketball team in scoring with 18 points against St. Francis (Pa.) on Nov. 28 but was not among the players available for a postgame interview. There's no hiding his impact on the Buckeyes, though. As their sixth man, the senior from Chicago is averaging 10.8 points per game and making a Big Ten-best 53.6 percent of his three-pointers. attempts. We trapped him before he made it out the door after last Saturday's game against Eastern Michigan.

Q: I heard you like doing interviews about as much as having a root canal.

A: I'm not into interviews. I just like to play ball and have fun on the court. I don't want to jinx myself. Sometimes interviews kind of get to your head a little bit. I'd rather (leave) that to the stars like Evan (Turner).

Q: Your nickname is A.O., for Automatic Offense. It's very applicable this season. Why are you shooting so well?

A: Over the summer, we all were consistent getting up a lot of shots every day. My teammates are finding me right now, and a lot of (defenders) are helping off on Evan and Jonny D (Jon Diebler). I'm just trying to knock down shots and make it easier for them.

Q: Coach Thad Matta said you gained weight and got stronger lifting weights in the offseason. Has that helped your shooting?

A: It has helped me a lot. It's kind of physical out there and you've got to take those bumps. Lifting (weights) helped me a lot.

What's wrong with Simmons?

Jeremie Simmons, who looked ready to challenge for the Big Ten's sixth man award when the conference season started, played eight minutes against West Virginia today and missed the only shot he attempted.

After making two big baskets late in the win at Purdue in the only four minutes he played in the game, he has not scored a point in the Buckeyes' past three games. He has played eight or fewer minutes in the past four games.

Something is wrong with Simmons medically but Ohio State has provided no details, probably because of federal privacy laws. I put in a request this week to speak with Simmons about it, but a team spokesman said Simmons doesn't want to talk about it.

"It's a nerve thing, so he should be OK," the spokesman, associate athletic director Dan Wallenberg, said earlier this week. "Nothing that's going to last."

Coach Thad Matta has said only that Simmons is "banged up."

Simmons made 58.5 percent of his field-goal attempts, including 51.2 of his three-point attempts, before Big Ten play began. Since then, he has made 6 of 26 shots overall, including 2 of 16 threes.

Outside the lines

Jeremie Simmons played 10 minutes against Illinois because of Diebler's first-half foul trouble, made just his fifth three-point basket since December and confirmed after the game that he had been afflicted for nearly two months by Bell's palsy, which caused his left eyelid to stay open.

"It went away like three weeks ago," Simmons said. "I'm good now."

In Ohio State's first 11 games, Simmons averaged 18.4 minutes and made 22 of 43 three-point shots (.512). He has averaged 9.2 minutes since and made 5 of 29 three-pointers.

Well, it's good to know there was a reason for his lack of PT. I hadn't even heard there was a medical issue until today, but it sounds like he's a private type. Hope he gets some quality minutes in a long NCAA run. Quite a luxury to essentially add another shooter right before the big dance.

Go Buckeyes!!!
