Five eye the Breslin Center

Yet, the Bearcats are probably underdogs against Flint Southwestern-Academy, a team that finished the regular season ranked No. 1 in the Associated Press Class B state rankings.
The Knights are 23-2, good for second place in the Saginaw Valley League. Led by point guard Anthony Crater, Southwestern's only league loss was to Saginaw High.
"They're a very good team ... you have to be to be rated No. 1 as long as they have," Bridgeport coach Al Brooks said. "They're talented, deep and have real good size. Crater is a concern, but their whole team is as well. They've got four other guys, but Crater makes them incredibly better."
Crater is a junior and one of the early favorites for next season's Mr. Basketball award. He has verbally committed to Ohio State.

Flint star is tops in Class B
Associated Press

MONROE ? Anthony Crater was the best ball-handling guard in Flint Southwestern Academy's basketball program before he was in high school.

"We knew he was going to be a special player when he was in junior high. His ball-handling skills were better than the kids on the varsity," Flint Southwestern coach Jeff Whiteley said.

Crater is a junior now and has more than lived up to expectations. He runs the offense for Southwestern, which finished the regular season as the top-ranked Class B team in The Associated Press poll.

And Crater has been voted the Class B player of the year by the 11-member panel that selects the AP All-State teams.

Crater is on the small side at 6-foot-1 and 160 pounds, but makes the Southwestern offense click.

"He has a great basketball IQ. He gets everybody involved. They feed off him," Whitely said. "If he has a fault, it's that he's too unselfish."

Crater averaged 16.2 points and 8.4 assists per game. He gave a verbal commitment to Ohio State in November, turning down Florida, Kansas, Arizona and Michigan State.

EAST LANSING - It was there, and then it wasn't.
Southwestern Academy had a spot in the Class B state championship game lined up, having led East Grand Rapids through much of their semifinal game Friday night, including a 12-point cushion early in the second half and a four-point lead with 5:35 left in the game.
Then it was gone.
The Knights disappeared for the rest of the game, going scoreless for 5 1ڲ minutes, and East Grand Rapids went on a stunning 19-0 run to pull out a 62-49 victory at the Breslin Center.
No. 4-ranked East GR will take a 25-2 record into tonight's title game against unranked Detroit Country Day (21-6), while No. 1 SWA goes home with a 24-3 mark.

Continued.....

"It's hard losing twice in the same game, the semifinals," said junior point guard Anthony Crater. "It's hard to face it.
"I thought we were playing pretty well, except for the last three minutes when we got sloppy with the ball and made a few bad decisions. The momentum just shifted."

Crater finished with eight points as SWA shot 19-of-57 (.333). But he had only four assists as the Knights struggled to get the ball inside.

Crater is playing with King of the Court which has Roe, Frease and I believe Pe'Shon Howard...In the update it said that he looked to be out of sync with the other guys, but he did have some flashes and the writer said to look out come Sunday as he should be more in sync with the rest of the team.

King of Court lost to Mean Streets in Quarter Final

So much for "in sync on Sunday"

Crater's assists this season were down from the 9.7 he averaged last year, when his 251 total stood as the second-most on record in Michigan history. But his scoring average was up 31/2 points as he inherited four new starting teammates and assumed more of the scoring load.

"He had to mature this year because he had a bigger role on the team," said SWA coach Jeff Whiteley. "Last year he had guys he could defer to, but he had to carry the load this year."

Crater also cranked it up when needed. He hit the winning basket against defending Class A champion Saginaw Arthur Hill, scored 22 in an overtime win against Romulus and had 20 points and 11 assists in a season-opening duel with Frankenmuth point guard Brad Redford. He also had 11 assists against Orchard Lake St. Mary.

In the showdown with Powers, Crater had 16 points, including two 3-pointers in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter and two free throws with 1.9 seconds left to nail down the win.
