PF Jared Sullinger (2x 1st Team ALL B1G & All American, Anyang KGC, S.Korea)

Coach Sullinger (dad) has benched Jared for the game. Unclear why, speculation was something like classwork.

If they beat westerville south tonight without him, they'll face Thomas worthington next weekend at the fairgrounds for the district finals.

I guess Coach Sullinger taught Jared and, unfortunately his team, a big lesson.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Coach Ed Calo felt great about Westerville South's stunning achievement last night but offered sympathy to his dejected opponent.
With All-Central District player Jared Sullinger out because of a team suspension, unbeaten Northland's dreams of a Division I championship ended in a district semifinal. Westerville South made 15 of 16 free throws in the fourth quarter to erase a 12-point second-half deficit and upset top-seeded Northland 67-59 in the Ohio Expo Center Coliseum.
"Even though they were not at full strength, it was still a great win for us because we played so hard and showed so much poise down the finish to get it done," Calo said. "I feel for (the Vikings) and for the young man and his teammates and certainly would like to have seen them at full strength.

Northland coach Satch Sullinger said he decided Thursday to suspend his son for falling behind in his assignments. Jared Sullinger, who has committed to Ohio State, was averaging 20 points and 12 rebounds.
"I decided that enough is enough, not just because the daddy role kicked in, but because the program's got to stand for something. ? Everybody's watching what we do," he said. "It sends out a message that we're not kidding when say our program is about family, books and then basketball. We wanted to hang a banner that stood for something."

It's a shame that the "lesson" was so final to the seniors on the team. Although this should really help Jared keep the priorities in order, and I'm glad for that for the long term, I wonder if a coach, who was not also his dad would have had the guts to make that call.

It is a tough lesson, and it is more than likely that all of the kids, departing and returning, will learn from it and be better because of it, though it must hurt now.
