PF/C Kosta Koufos (CSKA Moscow)

Triple-doubles are amazing at the high school level in any respect. Points and rebounds are one thing, but from there you have to rely on either your other HS teamates for assists or, even harder, racking up double digits on the defensive end.

And for Kosta (and BJ and Diebler) to be filling up the stat sheets like they are this season with 8 less minutes than in college ball is just awesome.

Just can't get over how excited I am for all of the recruits to get in Buckeye uniforms. I don't think I've been this excited for Buckeye hoops since I was a kid watching JJ, Treg, Perry, Baker, Brown, Jent, Funderburke...etc.

OSU recruit nears triple-double

GlenOak's Kosta Koufos tallies 33 points, 30 boards, 9 blocks in win over Hoover

By Mike Beaven

Special to the Beacon Journal

PLAIN TWP. - GlenOak boys basketball coach Jack Greynolds Jr. is growing accustomed to seeing his star player dominate -- and he has no complaints.
Golden Eagles senior forward Kosta Koufos had another excellent game Friday to lead host GlenOak to a 73-72 win over Federal League rival North Canton Hoover before a crowd of 2,063.
Koufos, a 7-foot-2 Ohio State recruit, scored 33 points and had 30 rebounds and nine blocks. He just missed recording his third triple-double of the season.

Koufos in action Bob Rossiter

PLAIN TWP. The game didn't disappoint. Neither did its biggest star.
The soldout crowd of 2,063 inside GlenOak High School got an instant classic Friday night with Kosta Koufos leading his Golden Eagles to a 73-72 win against a resilient Hoover squad. GlenOak boys basketball coach Jack Greynolds didn't know how his team would respond to a week of "getting patted on the back," especially in the hyped atmosphere of Friday.

I don't care who you are or how tall you are, 30 rebounds is NUTS.

Get this kid on campus! We're so fortunate to have so much to look forward as BBall Bucks fans...let's try not to forget how good the good times really are. :)

GlenOak center leads Eagles against Hoover
Friday, February 2, 2007
By JOSH WEIR repository sports writer

It's a big game on the surface. Look deeper and it gets bigger.
There hasn't been an adult ticket available since Wednesday morning for tonight's boys high school basketball game between North Canton Hoover and GlenOak, ranked eighth and 13th, respectively, in Ohio's Division I Associated Press poll.
The game has major Federal League and district ramifications. But it's also about two communities practically intertwined with each other. It's about two teams with different styles, one a blend of shooting, passing and pressure defense, and the other a once-in-a-generation talent surrounded by an improving supporting cast.
The soldout crowd at GlenOak should have a special night of basketball in store.
Even with all the side stories, the Golden Eagles' 7-foot-2 senior Kosta Koufos looms over this game like a skyscraper in suburbia.
"He's the best big man, I think, in the history of Stark County," said Hoover coach Randy Montgomery, who is not known for superlatives. "He's very skilled, has very few weaknesses. (Ohio State Head Coach) Thad Matta told me personally that he'd be starting if he were there right now."

Continued...

Randy Montgomery has coached against Jerry Stackhouse when he was in high school and has had a D-II player of year when he was at Triway so to say someone is the best is a decent compliment. Anyway watched Koufos on tv the other night agaisnt Mckinley and the kid is special but definitely still has some things to work on before he will be able to be consistent on the college level. Just like any freshman has to be consistent to be able to contribute regularly(Cook's defense keeping him from having more minutes) Koufos is going to have to work to be able to have a big impact. But this kid has all the potential in the world and I can't wait to see what he does when he gets to columbus. Best of luck to him.

BTW: 30 and 30 on any level is absolutely insane!

akron/canton talk about him is nuts. Some old school players/coaches are saying he might be the 2nd best player ever to come out of ohio. Lebron being first.

He would be a first rounder in the draft.
He reminds me of that first pick by toronto.

I've got a chance to see him a few times here in Canton....the kid is special. That said, he does have some things he needs to work on. If he can get it all together though, there is no telling what KK could do.

I thought it was KOO-fus...
i've heard his name pronounced both ways but more often as it rhymes with "dose." this pronunciation also coincides with the greek pronunciation. of course, the native pronunciation often does not carry over to american english pronunciation. considering that he is a first generation american, i suspect that the greek pronunciation is carried over.

i've not heard kosta pronounce his own name, so...
