have you heard kosta pronounce his own name? i haven't. you're probably correct; however, commentators often aren't. heck, if you ask digger, greg odom is our post.

if you watch the free video clip titled "ohio state's other big man," you will hear the commentator pronounce his name as KAW-stuh KOO-fohs (as in "dose"). again, until it is heard how kosta himself pronounces the name, it could be either way. not to beat a dead horse, though, i'd be surprised if it's not pronounced to rhyme with "dose," considering that his parents are native greek and KOO-fohs would be the greek pronunciation.

Not as bad as the guy on ESPN plus that always calls Buter Jamal...

I am sure someone will be able to help us here for sure...

BIG KOUF GlenOak's 7-foot-2 Kosta Koufos put on another show Friday with 33 points, 30 rebounds and nine blocks. One of the highlights was his consecutive blocks on one possession in the fourth quarter. He sprinted to block a transition layup, his momentum taking him out of bounds under the basket. He then collected himself and came back to swat away a put-back attempt by Hoover. "I didn't know he could recover that quickly," Greynolds said. Over his last five games, Koufos is averaging an astounding 31.4 points, 21.6 rebounds and 7.6 blocks. "He's going to be gone in a couple of months, so we've got to enjoy him while we have him," Greynolds said.

Hi i am Greek Basketball fan and maybe i am the 1st Greek that has heard about him in Greece. I have learn his name from scout.com, and after that i send an email in basketball magazine. After about 9 months i read in the same magazine that they was thanking me and the coach of Greek NT had meeting with him for the possibility to play for Greek NT and propably will play someday.

Koufos in English mean's deaf. I can also spell you his name, with the right way. The right spelling for his name is KOsta. (o is "O" not ou or u). His surname is Koufos "kou" spelled like "ou" on marvelous and the 2nd part "fOs" like the "fo" on "focus"

Sorry for my poor English, but i love the game and Kosta is the great hope of Greek basketball this time couz the new generation in Greece doesn't look very promising.

Thank you for the post, and that is some high praise to be picked for a national team as a high school junior...

I don't think that coach Yiannakis want's him now for Greek NT. Our bigs are some of the best outside US (Papadopoulos, Big Sofo are some of them), but for the future and the junior NT's.

From what i have seen from youtube, he doesn't play above the rim and his game with his back to basket isn't so developed. He also need's to me be nastier, but i have seen also some good fondamentals, like handling and shooting. Greeks players are known for there deffense so if the summer comes and work with coach Yiannakis (Greek and European legent of basketball) be sure that will help him alot on those areas.

Ok thanks I thought that he had already been selected...

I agree with what you have said about being nastier, he was somewhat pushed around in a game played against another one of our recruits who is very strong C prospect.

But I would say that he has great moves for a big man around the basket and a very soft touch. He will also step out and beat you off the dribble...

As for him being in the NBA I think that you will get your wish some day...

It was something about 3 minutes of clip. Sometimes was under the basket and was making lay up. I wanted to dunk there. Who could stop him??

I hear what you are saying, but sometimes when you are playing against guys that can't get up high enough to block your shot you go with the layup...

Went to see Koufos and Glen Oak play tonight. A few thoughts...

- The announcer was saying his name "Coasta" (like Coastal) "Coo-fis" (Coolio + fist). I'm assuming since he's the team announcer, he probably has the pronounciation pretty close.

- By our count, he finished with 26 points, 9 rebounds, 2 blocks, 1 assist and 1 steal in about 16 minutes of play - only played about half of the game because Glen Oak won by almost 40. He scored the first 13 points of the game and had 15 and 5 after about 5 minutes.

- When he came back in the second quarter (and the rest of the game), he seemed to be bored with the other team. I can't blame him, he was guarding a kid who was about 6'2" 140lbs, who would stand on the perimeter to pull him out of the middle.

- Ran the floor very well. He got several fast break dunks.

- He was much thicker than I thought he would be.

- He shot well, very smooth for a 7 footer, in limited attempts (including warmups)

- Glen Oak should play Kenny Frease's team on Friday, but Frease won't be playing. I'd love to finally see that matchup.

Assuming that Kosta is Greek the right spelling of his name is what i said earlier. I know that some Greek words isn't the easiest for someone to mispronounce. His name is pure Greek and very common in Greece or in Cyprus. But i think how his name spelled is not very important. The most important is that your collage get one great player and Greek NT wins the next great star.

Federal League boys basketball tournament: GlenOak?s winning streak reaches 11
Wednesday, February 7, 2007
By Jim Thomas Repository Sports Writer

CANTON Kosta Koufos could have named his numbers Tuesday night against visiting Austintown Fitch. But the only one that mattered to the 7-foot-2 GlenOak senior was No. 5, that of GlenOak High School point guard Mark Quinn.
"In a game like this, I'm looking for (other) guys to step up," Koufos said following the top-seeded Eagles' 81-44 triumph in the first round of the Federal League Tournament. "Mark did a nice job of bringing the ball down the court and setting up the offense."

Cont'd....

12-of-16 for 26 points and added 10 rebounds
