Penn State Cult (Joe Knew)

Surprised that this particular study doesn't take into account the value of night games vs. day games.
This past season, I was stunned the game at PSU was a nooner. Usually every opportunity to schedule OSU at night is taken when the game is at Penn State. I would give greater credence to his numbers if night games were taken into account as I believe the crowd/awesome stadium plays a greater factor in the evening than a sleepy noon-kickoff.

First, the "study" was just me copying and pasting the numbers I found on the internet into an excel sheet, and then separating them into columns for "in Columbus" and "in the erector set". Night games might be another way to look into it.

The reason it was at noon is because the Big Ten wanted to piss off the cult. Ha. At least, that's what the cult wants us to believe. In all actuality, Fox picked up the game early in the year. The game was to be on October 29, which they all knew would be during the World Series. I don't know how the World Series television contract works/worked, but we also knew that Fox would have the World Series game that night. So.... Fox chose to put Ohio State - Penn State on at noon.

I enjoy watching that cult cry about stuff, so I enjoyed them crying, saying that they should be allowed to dictate when the game was, not Fox. (Their argument was that since The Game is always at noon, they should be allowed to choose their white-out games. I wanted to see Ohio State show up on time and let Fox televise their work-out. Penn State can show up at 8:00 and be told that they already forfeited. That would be funny.

So, according to Wikipedia, Penn State has been doing their awesome white-out since 2004. In that time, they are 2-3 against Ohio State during white-out games, for an average score of 22.8-24.8. Outside of the white-out games, they are 0-4 against Ohio State at home in that time frame with an average score of 20.0-35.8.

Does that mean that the white-out caused the closer games? Maybe. But I think we need to look at the games, and maybe take a deeper dive into the statistics, DBB-style, and I'm not going to get that deep.

LOL, of course the field was shit. It's always shit out here but both teams played the same field dipshits. I didnt like the call either but it wasn't stopping that FG. Would the Eagles have tied it up or a miracle, who knows, but odds are the game ended with the correct winner.

Classic cultist belief. Because of that game, the Big Ten punished Penn State by dropping them to #2. Then, they were unable to play for a national championship and Nebraska won it. They don't understand that the Big Ten had 0 votes in the AP poll. The Big Ten coaches probably had some of the votes in the coaches' poll, but they don't cry about that one, for some reason. They only complain about the AP poll. Anyway, they whine because the "Big Ten voters" didn't vote them #1. Some believe it is because Joesus was too good of a person (can you really call him a "man"? I mean, he's certainly above all other humans, right?) and they only beat Indiana by a little bit. Joesus refused to run the score up on other teams. Others believe it was because they embarrassed Ohio State. (Oddly enough, when they beat Ohio State 63-14, it was not "running up the score", but when Ohio State beat Penn State, it was "running up the score".) The Big Ten punished Penn State for beating down their favorite son by dropping them to #2. And Penn State had no other chance to jump up to #1. What they don't want to remember is that the majority of their #1 votes were from voters within "Big Ten territory", and even if they got 100% of those votes, they still wouldn't have been #1.

As to whether this is the reason the conference (and therefore the referees) hate them, that's a new one to me. I'd always heard they weren't wanted at the beginning. (Blah blah blah, something about how they accepted their invitation in about 1990, but the Big Ten made them sit out until 1993.)

Anyway, see if this thread gets more fun today and tomorrow..

They just can't accept that there is no way in my blue heaven that even an undefeated PSU was going to move into the #2 spot. The 2 seconds that Joesus got are irrelevant. I don't know whether they should or shouldn't have gotten the 2 seconds. I don't even know the play. But yes, Lloyd got 2 seconds added on the clock. A receiver was tackled in bounds with 31 seconds. The ref signaled "keep the clock running." The initial ruling was that the timeout was awarded with 29 seconds left. Then they added 2 seconds back to the 31 seconds. I didn't watch the game live, but I remember seeing a video that showed that the 31 seconds was correct. I can't seem to find it now. So, take it as you want - 31 seconds or 29 seconds.

The heel-toe catch is much goofier. It was right before or right after the 31 seconds. It wasn't a huge gain, and wouldn't have been make-or-break for either team. But it's goofy. Receiver caught the ball in the air, brought his foot down, picked it back up, and then fell out of bounds. The official ruling was that his toes came down in bounds without his heel coming down. He picked his foot up (heel still not coming down) and then landed out of bounds. To me, I'd say his heel hit before he picked it up. But it's goofy that that play was never reviewed. I'm definitely not a conspiracy theorist or a cult defender, but I believe that the referees were wrong on that play. I don't think it was intentional.

Regardless, the play is over. The game is over. Whether Penn State won is irrelevant to how that season went on. Penn State would not have passed Texas or USC. Penn State went on to barely beat 8-4 Florida State. Did they need overtime to win it? I forget.
