Penn State Cult (Joe Knew)

Others have mentioned it before, but the fundamental problem is how much they derive their own personal worth and values through Joe Paterno and Penn State football.

Post-scandal, I have especially noticed how much The Cult's self-worth is tied to the attendance at PSU football games. One of the default talking points is almost always "Yea, but 107,000 fans..." Of course, when something like Alabama coming in and turning huge sections of the stadium crimson is mentioned, then it becomes the university's fault for being greedy and not letting the fifth generation of PSU fans sit on the 50-yard for a $100 donation each year.

According to Joesus, Nixon invited him and his football team to the White House to give them a "good job on going undefeated in 1968 and 1969, sorry you didn't get a national championship" trophy, and he told them to shove it. I don't buy his version of the story.

Oh, no. Those Sparty bastards don't see the glory that was Joesus and are "...in the stone age of ignorance." According to Audibles, it is only fans of programs with "...Napoleon complexes and histories of mediocrity" that have an issue with covering up the ***-raping of children.

http://pennstate.scout.com/forums/1...ans-still-in-the-stone-age-of-ignorance?s=157

They justify child rape because it doesn't fit their mythology about a guy who led young adults in a sport that requires more protection than combat troops and still reduces lifespan by decades...
... because accepting the reality of what this charismatic leader enabled destabilizes their fragile beta male egos pinned on physical exertion of teenagers while they shovel a veritable feast of unhealthy food and alcohol into their already obese stomachs...
... but it's other people that are stuck in the stone age and ignorant?
Hmmmm.

I love sport as much as the next guy. But if you confuse it with having some grand purpose beyond idle entertainment ... you either live in a 3rd world country where it's the only thing to look forward to and provide meaning and hope, or you're one deluded motherfucker in something that borders a cult.

I don't know if you guys have ever seen this parody of Don McLean's "American Pie" before, but it is absolutely amazing with its description of Joesus, The Cult and pop culture references. The parody was written a few months after Joesus' work on Earth was done.

PENNSYLVANIA PIE

A long, long time ago
I can still remember how that JoePa used to make me smile
And, I knew if I had my chance that "We are Penn State!" I would chant,
and...
Maybe I'd be happy for a while
But, last November made me shiver, with each newspaper they'd deliver
Bad news on the doorstep - were kids raped while JoePa slept?
I can't remember if I cried when I read about his baleful pride,
but
Something touched me deep inside, I knew Paterno lied

So, bye bye Miss Pennsylvania Pie
Asked their knowledge at State College, but their knowledge they did hide, and
Them good ol' boys they were wearin' blue and white ties, singing...
Joe's a saint, he would never lie,
Joe's a saint, he would never lie

Did you know our team we love, and do you have faith in Joe, above
If cheerleaders tell you so
Now, do you believe in New Year's bowls, can football save your mortal soul? And...
Can I wear a rubber mask of Joe?
Well, I know we can't speak truth of him, 'cause I saw the students rioting
His team wore old black shoes - so no way he'd allow abuse!
I was a bitter Lion fan with pluck, clinging to God, to guns and my pickup truck, but...
I knew I was out of luck. You see, Paterno lied

I started singing, bye bye Miss Pennsylvania Pie
Asked their knowledge at State College, but their knowledge they did hide, and
Them good ol' boys they were wearin' blue and white ties, singing...
Joe's a saint, he would never lie,
Joe's a saint, he would never lie

Now, for six months we've been on our own, with no JoePa 'round to set our tone, but...
That's not how it used to be
When Sandusky coached such tenacious D, his "retirement" was a mystery
Or then so it seemed to you and me, and
While Joe said nothing strange went down, as Jerry brought more boys around
The courtroom was adjourned - a verdict was returned
While the foreman read out Jerry's guilt, what of Joe's statue that we built?
Like old Joe Stalin's, will it tilt, because Paterno lied?

We were singing, bye bye Miss Pennsylvania Pie
Asked their knowledge at State College, but their knowledge they did hide, and
Them good ol' boys they were wearin' blue and white ties, singing...
Joe's a saint, he would never lie,
Joe's a saint, he would never lie

Helter, skelter, Joe's commands we knelt for - the East we fled for the Big Ten's shelter
Midwest schools where we're miscast
We've landed far from our past
Now athletes beat students en masse, and JoePa, on the sidelines, gives a pass
Now, his "discipline" was sweet perfume, "run steps" to Blue Band marching tunes
Triponey took a stance, oh, but she never stood a chance
'Cause the whole school was Joe's practice field - on that he just refused to yield
Do you recall what Freeh revealed, the ways Paterno lied.

We started singing, Bye bye Miss Pennsylvania Pie
Asked their knowledge at State College, but their knowledge they did hide, and
Them good ol' boys they were wearin' blue and white ties, singing...
Joe's a saint, he would never lie,
Joe's a saint, he would never lie

And, now put yourself in Joe's place - a geriatric saving face
With no time left to start again
So, come on, Joe be nimble, Joe be quick - upstairs the info Joe did kick, cause...
He'd later "talk" with Curley, his good friend
Though Joe's spin doctors take the stage, the victims fuel good people's rage,
No four-hundred-nine wins, absolve such monstrous sins
And, as they cried excuses through the night, to try to prove their idol right, I saw...
Satan laughing with delight. He knows Paterno lied

He was singing, bye bye Miss Pennsylvania Pie
Asked their knowledge at State College, but their knowledge they did hide, and
Them good ol' boys they were wearin' blue and white ties, singing...
Joe's a saint, he would never lie,
Joe's a saint, he would never lie

I met a boy in white and blue, and I asked him for some happy news
He just frowned and turned away
I went down to Beaver Stadium once more, where I'd heard the cheering years before, but...
The man there said the cheering went away
In Joe's locker-room the children screamed, their mothers cried, yet no help was seen, for...
Not a word was spoken - State's alarm bells all were broken
And the three men I admired most: Joe the Father, Joe the Coach, Joe of Pious Boasts, he...
"reported up" and drank a toast. Yes, Joe Paterno lied.

And, they were singing, bye bye Miss Pennsylvania Pie
Asked their knowledge at State College, but their knowledge they did hide, and
Them good ol' boys they were wearin' blue and white ties, singing...
Joe's a saint, he would never lie,
Joe's a saint, he would never lie

Yes, they were singing, bye bye Miss Pennsylvania Pie
Asked their knowledge at State College, but their knowledge they did hide, and
Them good ol' boys they were wearin' blue and white ties, singing...
Joe's a saint, he would never lie

This went out to PSU grads this morning:

A Message from the Leadership at Penn State

September 5, 2014

Dear friends:

For decades, few universities could match the considerate manner in which Penn Staters treated both friend and opponent. In particular, to see someone wearing a Penn State T-shirt while traveling was a guarantee of a common bond and warm conversation no matter how distant the location. Today, that rather remarkable bond is under stress.

Unfortunately, there are many examples in every university where differences of opinion lead to incivility. For Penn State, one issue is of particular concern. There are honest disagreements on fundamental issues related to whether our institution acted appropriately, how our institution handled a crisis, and whether the sanctions that resulted are appropriate. Reasonable people can be found on all sides of these issues. The reasons for this disagreement are clear. Much is still left to interpretation and the issues have considerable emotional significance to us all. We are likely never to have the full story. We are equally likely never to reach consensus.

The question is whether a lack of civility in discussing these issues will create a deeper divide, one that alters the remarkable bond that exists between all those who are a part of the Penn State community. Consider just a few examples that you may have also come across – the alumnus who says he lost his best friend over his opinion of the Freeh report; the alumni trustee candidate that faced dozens of unkind comments; the long time donor of time and treasure who no longer feels welcome.

Debate and disagreement are critical constructs in the role of universities in testing ideas and promoting progress on complex issues. But, the leaders of your University at every level, from the administration, faculty, staff and students, are unanimous in deploring the erosion of civility associated with our discourse. Reasonable people disagree, but we can disagree without sacrificing respect. The First Amendment guarantees our right to speak as we wish, but we are stronger if we can argue and debate without degrading others.

Today, civility is an issue that arises in many areas of campus debate. Some may argue that the lack of civility is a national issue, promoted by a growing community involved in posting anonymous comments on blogs or by acrimonious national politics. We cannot afford to follow their lead, not if we are to serve our students as role models, not if we expect to continue to attract the outstanding volunteers who serve our University in so many ways, and not if we wish to have Penn Staters take our University to new levels of excellence.

Respect is a core value at Penn State University. We ask you to consciously choose civility and to support those whose words and actions serve to promote respectful disagreement and thereby strengthen our community.

Signed,

Members of the President’s Council (unanimous)

Choose positivity.

:slappy:

This type of stuff just eats at them....years later....gnawing away.

I'm curious of what that play is. I know they complain a lot of the no-call holding on Braxton's odd-looking squirming leap into the endzone. They whine about the OSU defender (I forget who) who lost his helmet and still played for 1 more second, and didn't get a penalty. They complain about Penn State's last touchdown when the guy was already in the endzone when the Ohio State defender tackled him low. I don't know about a "phantom" holding call.

And yeah that eats at them. I've seen them complain that Gamble interfered with their receiver at the end of the 2002 game. They complain about a bounce-pass to a tight end in 2003. (Edit: See BN27's post above this one.) This is 10+ years later. Hell, I seem to remember them whining about a play against Ohio State in 1995.

What other play could have been than the block on Mauti (RIP) for Braxton's leaping TD. I actually think it was holding.....except he was holding the inside of the shoulders so it's where you're allowed to hold and get away with it. Whoever it was that was blocking the dearly departed never got his hands on the outside.

Actually it was a lot like the gif somebody posted of Orlando Pace driving Lavar Arrington into the ground. He spun him right into the dirt and never once had to pull on the outside of a shoulder.

I was under the impression that it was a holding call on Penn State that, when watching the replay, no one can find.

oh you're probably right. that was the call on our punt that gave us the ball back. something about the snapper being yanked down to the ground immediately after the snap. it's completely illegal as we know from the 2006 Michigan game, but they don't know about the rule so obviously it's a terrible call sent down from Delaney himself to keep Penn State in check.

Yeah, I think it's the one where they grabbed our long snapper and threw him to the ground as he was trying to release downfield and claimed that the long snapper was trying to chop block the guy and he was only defending himself.

If I recall correctly (because I broke down the things they were bitching about one by one while watching that game if anyone wants to try to find that) Ohio State didn't even score on the drive and gave the ball back to Penn State anyway.

Claiming that the long snapper was trying to chop block someone is the height of stupidity. No one touches the long snapper (by rule because he has his head down and can't see) and the long snapper doesn't touch anyone else which is why they are always the first one down the field in coverage.

Throwing the long snapper to the ground right out of his stance is total bush league nonsense and trying to claim that he was going to chop block someone is stupid beyond description. A long snapper has literally never chop blocked anyone in the history of modern football but on that one play that's what the Ohio State player was trying to do.
