Not at all. If he hadn't worn shorts on his recruiting trip, Sandusky would never have succumbed to his boyish wiles, and the following chain of events would have been broken.

So in short, Al Golden killed Paterno.

I like this one:

Most of the top players expect to be paid under the table in one form or another, and they expect to not have to go to college.
Schools that offer those things are going to get the lions share of the difference-making players, the players who have NFL talent. PSU is only going to compete for the players who WANT to go to college and DON'T expect to be paid -- and there aren't that many of those kids in the Top 250, and there are a lot of schools recruiting them.

Seriously. Ped State was irrelevant in the 50s. Ohio State won two NC's. They were irrelevant until about 67 or 68 and then were no better than a peer to Ohio State and Michigan through the 70s. I'll give them a ten year window (helped immeasurably by JoePed's tailored cupcake schedule and handpicked ref crews) of 82 to 92. 93, Ohio State woke up from its slumber, and the three programs were roughly equal through 97. Since then Ohio State has dominated them, and they've been roughly equal to Michigan.
