Penn State Cult (Joe Knew)

Has a dead man ever been hired to coach college football? Nits could set a precedent here.

Hadn't they already?

I mean... it's silly... Tressel won a lot of football while at Ohio State... he did a lot of good things on and off the field.. but.. I do not fucking love the guy. He's not like.. my father or brother or some [Mark May].. he coached my favorite team, that's all.
I love Woody Hayes, but I don't worship him.

I think the RC Church would look at how Paterno is regarded by these yokels and excommunicate the lot of them for idolatry.

Exactly. I wasn't around for Woody, but I know the guys who played for him speak of him in very high regard, Archie for example. And, for that reason, even as crazy as he is - at least Paterno had some direct personal influence on Crazy Franco Harris, so I can at least understand HIM feeling the way he does... but.. for the average fan... it's a friggin football coach. Period. As an Ohio State fan, I feel happy when they win a football game. When they lose, I feel not so happy. But, it's not my goddamned identity. I actually had a conversation with a friend before OSU lost to MSU - he said something about "getting embarrassed" if Ohio State lost to Flast... I said, "If Ohio State lost to Flast 100 - 0, I wouldn't be embarrassed" "you should be!" he retorted... and I'm like.. for something I have no control over? I'm supposed to feel some sort of personal .. deep personal connection to results of a game I have nothing to do with but the viewing?

It's just plain weird. I am happy Tressel coached at Ohio State. I loved feeling the joy of the 2002 NC. But, Jesus... it didn't make me a better fuckin person.

I'm rambling, I guess... but.. you get the point I'm sure

Much as I'd have liked the Bucks to win the game against Sparty, the hangover only lasted about a day, then I was over it. Helps if you don't invest your entire identity in the outcome of a game. I liked Tress for the most part, disagreed with some of his decisions. I like Urban a lot. Not planning any trips to my local tat parlor to have his image embedded in my skin.

Rambling too--suspect allowing oneself prolonged exposure to toxicity does that. You can be crazy about your team without being crazy. period.

You should spend more time with Tim Tebow. He will make you a better person.
