As part of its probation, USC is prohibited from taking advantage of an NCAA rule that allows teams to play 13 games if one is in Hawaii. The NCAA's Committee on Infractions apparently included the language about the exemption to prevent use similar to that employed by Alabama, which scheduled 13th games at Hawaii in 2002 and 2003 after it was put on probation.

Then why has the NCAA not stepped in and said 'no' to this? Ireland not considered a "desired location?" I mean, the famine is over and the Brits only control one small section.

I think the difference is PSU wants to move one of there games over to Ireland and not adding another game, saying that.... They protested penalties of losing local money from game days???? They should not be allowed to play any home games outside of their home stadium.

Yes, but that misses the point. To not see this as anything less than a ploy to get around suspension - to have a special game with national/international attention - in an exclusive location that the program can/will use to offset the loss of bowl appearances, is a joke.

I think it's great. The only real benefit they will get from it is the ability to tell prospects on the upcoming recruiting class that they'll get to go on a trip. The rest of it has the potential to be a real boondoggle.

National/international attention? Who's gonna go? Do people in Ireland have any reason to pay attention to this or attend? This isn't Notre Dame we're talking about? How many of their own fans are going to make the trip? College football teams are finding it a little harder to fill their own stadiums these days, and now they're going to put an ocean between them and the people who are finding excuses to not go? I wouldn't be surprised if you looked at the stands for this game and it ended up looking like an ACC Championship.

What about TV? Are they gonna make it an afternoon game in Ireland, so that it's a morning game on TV locally? Who's gonna go out of their way to watch that besides the fans in each region? Or will they make it a night game in Ireland (which would put it right at 3:30 ET in the States) - where it will probably be overshadowed by 3:30 games involving better teams?

I'm sure they will pocket a significant payout from this, but the travel and tourism costs will cancel out a significant chunk of it. Even if they are not taking a loss from this venture, they probably aren't making the kind of money that they would with a regular home date.

It does kinda put into perspective the whole appeal about the sanctions being unfair because it took money out of the regional economy though.

Bingo. Next they'll want to relocate their game with Eastern Michigan to Honolulu...
