Penn State Cult (Joe Knew)

Exactly. I'm [censored]ed that Penn State didn't get shut down for four years, which is what should've happened. I don't think that the actual sanctions will hurt Penn State nearly as much most people anticipated. Certainly they won't be "worse than the death penalty", which was a common mantra earlier in the year.

I wanted the death penalty, but I haven't given up on the sanctions just yet. They lost maybe 5 or 6 players who would have contributed this year, and I don't think--particularly in the context of O'Bannion's (he's kind of a dick, right?) ability to coach--that was enough for the destruction we all hoped for.

It's over the next two years that the sanctions will really begin to kick in through their shitty recruiting classes. Combine that with the possibility that O'Bannion (he's kind of a dick, right?) hitting the eject button and things may yet get quite ugly for the pedsters.

Why do they have 2005 & 2008 hanging on their stadium?

PSU's biggest problem on offense next year will be quarterback. The only other player of note that they lose is their center. Not only is Steven Bench (the guy they flipped from Rice) a questionable talent, but he's the only other scholarship QB on their roster, IIRC. They get in Hackenburg next year, but that's still only two players. Regardless, they'll definitely take a step back next season on offense because of the dropoff in talent at QB.

On defense, their losses are substantial. They lose three starting DL, both OLBs, and their best defensive back. There is still some talent in the front seven, but the depth is extremely shallow. A definite step back on the defensive side as well.

Their schedule next season isn't all that difficult, though, and I can see them eking out a 4-5 win season with merely adequate QB play.

Not until LOI is signed. A lot could happen between now and early Feb that might just change his mind.

Seriously, if you were a 4 or 5 * prospect that has NFL type of skills, why in the hell would you go to a school that will be decimated roster-wise for the next few years, and have no post season to help showcase your talent?

I wonder which comes first Hackenburg flipping or O'Brainfart leaving? I have a feeling if one goes the other will to. Hackenburg is really the only bright spot that might keep Ped State relevant for the next 4 years so if he flips the hole will be a mile deeper. If I were Ped State I would be trying to flip the QB's that are looking at Akron, YSU, or UMass.

Actually, the penalties did hit. Penn State players were allowed to transfer immediately without sitting out a year - remember that little provision of the consent decree? And as a result, Penn State lost their two best offensive players, plus their place kicker. The loss of PK Fera definitely cost them a game, and RB Redd and WR Brown definitely could have been difference makers this year.

Before this season PSU still has a decent amount of depth left over from past recruiting classes. That is about to disappear completely.

They 10 per year scholarship reduction hitting next year is where the hurting starts.

As far as current recruiting, Penn State is 9th in the Big Ten and 42nd nationally with just 13 recruits (according to Scout). By the way, they have more top-100 recruits (2) then every Big Ten school except for Ohio State (6) and Michigan (5). They have the #2 TE, and the #5 QB in the country committed. Granted, Penn State has only two more slots open for this class, but they have done quite well even with the scholarship limitations.
I will say this one more time...

Go to a recruiting site, click on their class & sort it by commitment date.

Teams like Boise State and TCU have shown that you can turn a bunch of two- and three-star talents into a very solid college football team, given the right coaching and a viable scheme.
PSU isn't playing in the MWC/WAC. The BSU/TCU comparison is completely meaningless.

I was kind laughing (but not surprised) that Bill O'Brien is probably going to be named Big Ten Coach of the Year Monday, after turning a 9-4 team into an 8-4 team (not 6-7 to 12-0).

Then I thought to myself, at least Ohio State doesn't have to write settlement checks in the near future. Then I started smiling.

I think if BOB stays, there's no reason he can't get good coaching and exposure to nfl scouts. But if BOB bolts I'd bet all my 10k v-wellfare that he decommits the next day.

Their defense is taking a big hit and who will be the QB next year? Whoever he is he'll be constantly under the gun. I think a couple of the TEs drop down to O-line. Quality depth will become a huge issue. They will lose some more games and have trouble getting 6-7 wins. McGloin had a huge year and they don't have a guy any where near his equal.
