Penn State Cult (Joe Knew)

I felt the need for this to be posted... Both for their delusion, and ORD's awesomeness.

Here's the part that gets me.

They had someone trolling the site for months in an exact imitation of exactly the sort of lunatic that makes the rest of the country feel ill. Had they kicked him out or at least asked him to tone it down, I'd say it wasn't really fair to make them out to be worse than they are.

Instead, they cheer him on, make him one of the leaders of the Kool-Aid Coalition, and put him in charge of beverages. Egads.

The one good thing that may come out of this for PSU is a better chance for the sane folks to distance themselves from the loons, now that the worst of them have coalesced into one large Kool-Aid Man lump.

This is a great point and shouldn't be underestimated. I think it's becoming clear that the students want no part of the cult. None (or only a handful) attended the rally (and how many of them were just passing by on a Saturday morning walk of shame), and both student newspapers have editorial/comment this morning ripping it.

I think the riot was simply a bunch of alcohol fueled kids--half of whom were probably just there in the hopes of hooking up--reacting on a whim. Their indifference is an actual good sign that there might be hope for that place however slim.

Tell me Leeann, how should we concentrate on our own troubles? Should our students have rioted the night the coach was fired and flipped over news vans? Should we have had board of trustee members go rogue in their support for that coach? Should we have multiple websites up whining that we were framed, all the evidents! is fake and that we're going to "take down" the national press, ncaa and own administration? Should we have former players sitting in boxes at the stadium with lifesize cutouts of the coach. Should we have rallied on The Oval yesterday like a bunch of football obsessed fools?

We did concentrate on our troubles. We recognized and admitted that there were transgressions in our program. We fixed them, and we're dealing with with our punishment with quiet dignity. Learn something you stupid bitch.
You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to Tom Corbett again.

BTW, in response to these fools who say it's not about JoePa or it's not about football. Look at that sign the guy behind the cutout is holding. It's ALL about restoring that corrupt old man's record and legacy. 409 signs. Lifesize cardboard cutouts of him. A rogue board member dressing up like him "in tribute."

Like I said, the greatest trolling I did was in actually helping them to pull this abortion off and shine the bright light of stupidity on them. The rest was just bonus time.

So you're saying Lance doesn't get an interview in the school paper?

I say this with significant reservations, but it might not be a terrible idea for you to contact those papers, explain how things came about, and opine that the board - and the students - need to step up in a much bigger way and prevent the loons from doing irreparable harm to the school's reputation. They have the scandal itself doing damage on one side of the wall while the crazies chip away at it from the other. They really need to do more than say they'll consider the steps in the Freeh report - they need to do something big to show the rest of the country they're serious about changing the culture.

For one thing, the BOT could stop smiling and nodding when the cultists act up and actually tell them they ARE the cultural problem that Penn State must overcome. Seriously, if you can't get board votes for condemning lunatics, it's all over anyway.

As a graduate student at Penn State and someone who believes in rational discourse, I personally, would appreciate you contacting the paper(s) that interviewed you. As much fun as it is rile up the extremes to see their reaction, I have to wonder if you did more harm than good. I've seen complaints on bwi (from psu fans) that anyone who doesn't agree with the extremes get run off the board. All the trolls on the board are just exacerbating the problem. They strengthen the Us vs Them mentality of the board. All the sanity either gets pulled to the extreme or leaves the board. I don't really give a shit if a bunch of message board posters want to dig up joe pa so they can be touched one last time. But this rally and the newspaper interviews can help bring the Us vs Them mentality from the internet fringes to the real life mainstream mentality. It's hilariously sad how out of touch some of these people are *cough* Franco Harris. But these people are the vocal minority. The Chicago interview that you participated in contained 2 reasonably sounding psu alums and you sounding like a jackass cultist. At the time I said I hoped it wasn't you. I really didn't see the utility in giving more credence to the extremes.

Personally, I'd love to see a follow up story, as deety suggested. For 1, I think it would piss off the bwi extremes. But more importantly, I think setting the record straight could actually provide a benefit for the average run of the mill fan when s/he has to interact with someone who says the whole Jerry Sandusky scandal was a conspiracy to bring down the university.

I've already received one death threat and several threats of violence on the facebook page. Now, that's all fun and games because I've insulated myself to a degree that they could never track me down.

The problem, however, with doing a real media interview is that any respectable journalist is probably going to want to confirm my real i.d. after all of this, and there is no way that is getting out to the cult.

At the end of the day, I really don't see how much credibility I would have after this stunt....and that's pretty much what it was: an amusing, if somewhat childish, punking of the cult. As I posted earlier today, the cult gave any right thinking Penn Staters more than enough ammo themselves at the rally. That should be more than enough for students, and student journalists to say ENOUGH.
