Add to that the number of people who live in Manhatten and have never been to MOMA, The Empire State Building or the Park.

I taught in Albany, a school district in the East Bay. Albany sent all their 5th graders to Point Reyes National Seashore for a week because a survey proved that though they lived within walking distance of San Francisco Bay, 75% had never seen the ocean.

I taught on Fairmont Hill in Cincinnati and found that most of my 8th graders had never crossed the Ohio River.

The fact is that most humans are very tied to a very small area and display little interest, or feel little need, to go outside that area.

It doesn't take more than a trip to Walmart in Florence, KY or Brown County, Ohio to see proof of years of in-breeding. In that regard central PA is little different that almost anyplace on earth where education and job opportunity are limited. What is unusual is to put a major university in the middle of such a setting.
