I haven't been paying attention that closely lately - with the incoming recruiting class and outgoing transfers, does anybody know how many scholarship players they have on hand at this point.
Rep to anyone who comes up with an accurate number and/or keeps a running tally.
To be fair, we're about one suspension from the same thing.
Tough to do with walk-ons (McGloin is one) but here is what I came up with.
On their roster they had 60 players who were listed as recruits on Scout. They had a class of 20 coming in. They also had 8 players listed on O'Briens spring depth chart who were apparently walk-ons.
Of their 8 lost players, 6 are from those 60 scholarship players, 1 is from that incoming class of 20, and one was a walk on (Buckley - listed as second team safety).
Fera is the only loss who would not have eligibility remaining after this season.
What I found particularly interesting is that their two-deep secondary included THREE walk-ons (albeit they have four DBs in the incoming class).
Here is where the math gets interesting. Of those 60 schollie players 21 are either out of eligibility or have transferred. Take 39 (60-21) and add the remaining 19 from the incoming class and you are at 58.
The NCAA - with its bizarre sense of humor - allows PSU to stay at 85 total both this season and next. However, the 15 cap on incoming starts next year. That means they can only get to 73 (58+15) before they start handing out scholarships to all their walk-ons. (Of course, there are rules on giving schollies to walk-ons as well.)
Oh, and I forgot about the late addition to last years class (the one who had an online football scholarship from DeVry). That makes their number 74 next year.
And when they get to 2017 and can have 25 new players, they are still capped at 65. That means you can only give 25 if you only bring 40 forward.
And in 2018 when they go back to 85? You can only go from 65 to 85 if you only lose five seniors.
I love the NCAA.
