Penn State Cult (Joe Knew)

On some level, I find it funny that we're having a discussion, albeit a bit chippy but nonetheless fairly frank, regarding Iowa and State Penn football being roughly the same level over a period of time that spans longer than my children's lives on the low end and longer than the lives of most kids on either campus on the high end...

I respect people who have both opinions on 1994. Nobody knows what would have happened in a theoretical game. All conjecture.

I grew up in Michigan in the 1980s, so I grew up in B1G country. Even as a kid, the "B1G Champion goes to the Rose Bowl, end of story" mindset of the 1980s confused me. Why limit yourself such?

I am happy that our conference eventually agreed. The 1994 and 1997 systems, where PSU/U-M didn't play Nebraska but instead played good but not elite Pac-12 champions in Pasadena, were dumb. The 2002 and 2006 systems, where OSU played Miami/UF for all the marbles, was infinitely better.

1. Agreed on 1994. If you think Penn State would have won, then cool. If you think Nebraska would have won, then cool. But anyone who comes off as "ABC would have beat XYZ that year, end of story" is too annoying for me. I believe Ohio State could have beaten Florida State in 1998. Both had 1 loss - why wasn't Ohio State in? Ohio State could have beaten Tennessee that year. Whining about it like your opinion is gospel just makes me laugh at you. (And, for the record, when I say "your" I'm not talking directly to 409fold).

2. Big Ten Champion goes to the Rose Bowl - that was a tradition that I enjoyed. I liked to pretend that it bothered the rest of the country more than it hindered the Big Ten. Whether that's true, I don't really care, anymore. I think the tradition was better suited for when the bowl games were more of an exhibition game than a real game. But anymore, I think the tradition was weakened by the fact that the Rose Bowl lost its Big Ten teams many years due to the champion team (Ohio State) being in the national championship game (2002, 2006, 2007). Or hosting the national championship (2001, 2005).

3. While I do like to hear fans of other teams whining about 1994 and 1997, I guess I probably have to agree with you.

The B1G being IN the Rose Bowl --- I definitely enjoyed that growing up. Just wish there was always a dynamic where "as long as it isn't the Title Game, the Rose Bowl will still always be B1G vs. Pac-10." I know other conferences didn't like that. But still: in 2002, sending Iowa to the Orange Bowl (to play USC, no less), instead of the Rose Bowl to play Pac-10 champ Washington State: unfortunate.

On a side note: I don't understand why more B1G teams don't schedule UCLA home-and-home. That's another way to get to Pasadena. Fans would make the trip. UCLA is doing some strange "mid-major dumpster diving" for home-and-homes in the 2010s: Rice, Houston, Cincinnati, UNLV, Memphis. I'd think any B1G team that called UCLA would get a favorable response.

...

I hold a different opinion: I don’t believe Christian Hackenberg should even be drafted.

...

There isn’t a more inaccurate quarterback prospect in this draft with a reasonable chance at being drafted. Hackenberg is inaccurate at every level of the field, on all throws and against all coverages.

This season his completion percentage when adjusted for drops, spikes, etc. was 64.0 percent, which was 120th in the nation. In 2014, he was 105th. Every accuracy number you look at sees Hackenberg struggle, and the tape shows the same thing.

Even when under no pressure at all this past season, he completed just 61.9 percent of his passes. That’s the same completion percentage Cardale Jones managed on all plays, not just pressure plays, and Jones is a player whose accuracy is seen as a negative.

The Houston series was initially scheduled in May 2008. Yes, Houston was coming off a couple of decent seasons (10-4 in 2006, 8-5 in 2007), but in the larger-scale, they had only had 4 winning seasons in the last 11, and 5 in the last 17. Houston wasn't playing in BCS-level Bowls at that point (hadn't even won ANY Bowl game since 1980).

BTW, buckeyesin07, as I just noticed it was you who responded. That's how you do it: either say "I was wrong, my bad" or "support your point with a piece of factual information, and see where the debate goes."

409, are you a member of the PSU Alumni Association and did you receive one of those surveys that the Cult uses to express rage toward their own alumni association? So many great responses -- from the poster who returned the survey with the response "No dough until you free Joe." to the guy who says take Rodney Erickson's name off the Creamery and honor Joesus. At least it's not like every respondent cares solely about Joesus' image. :bored:

What an awful job that must be to have to sift through the correspondences and read the Cult's rage that Joesus was martyred by his own school.

Hey, the alumni association forgot to ask the alumni if they think that PSU should honor Joesus.

I did not get one of those surveys. Although, I am not a member of the larger PSAA (I see no benefits to joining; I am a due-paying member of my local Chapter in Cincinnati, which I do find worthwhile).

I did have a snarky response in that first thread. Post #20. My response got very little reaction. I didn't mention JoePa, of course, so nobody immediately jumped down my throat. :-)
