Why is the University going to need to pay the victims money? What is the legal precedent for this? Is it some kind of pain and suffering where the victims can sue for millions of dollars because of the emotional/physical damage caused? Could they sue Sandusky as well and go after his wife's money? I can get that the victims would get free counseling and so forth, but it just seems a bit odd that they would get hundreds of thousands of dollars because they were abused. More of a curiosity thing because I've seen these statements thrown around, but I don't really know the justification for the civil lawsuits. I would appreciate someone with a good background in law or cases like this explaining it.
